At New York Comic Con, Warner Bros. Animation, DC, and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment revealed they are turning the classic Batman: Knightfall storyline into a new animated movie series.
For the first time, the iconic ‘Knightfall’ storyline from the early 1990s is being adapted into animated form. The first part, titled *Batman: Knightfall – Knightfall*, is scheduled for release in 2026.
The Story of Knightfall
This first part of the story is based on the beginning of the well-known comic book series. It shows Bane breaking all of Batman’s enemies out of Arkham Asylum, which throws Gotham City into complete chaos. Batman is then pushed to his limits, both physically and mentally.
The official synopsis reads:
As a huge Batman fan, I was completely hooked by the setup in that film. Basically, this new villain, Bane – a seriously intimidating force – breaks all of Batman’s classic enemies *out* of Arkham Asylum. It’s not just a physical fight for Batman; it really messes with his head and pushes him to his absolute limit. It’s a brutal test of everything he is.
The Team Behind the Film
Okay, so Jeff Wamester, who did a great job on *Justice Society: World War II*, is directing this one, and the script comes from Jeremy Adams – I really enjoyed his work on *Batman: Soul of the Dragon*. Rick Morales is keeping everything running smoothly as Supervising Producer, and Jim Krieg and Kimberly S. Moreau are the main producers. Plus, you’ve got the heavy hitters Sam Register and Michael Uslan – he’s been with Batman forever! – as Executive Producers, so it’s a solid team behind the scenes.
The Legacy of the Comics
The 1990s DC storyline *Batman: Knightfall*, created by writers Doug Moench, Chuck Dixon, Alan Grant, Dennis O’Neil, Peter David, and Jo Duffy, along with artists Jim Aparo, Graham Nolan, Norm Breyfogle, and Jim Balent, is a landmark story in Batman’s history. It’s particularly famous for introducing the villain Bane and for the iconic scene where Bane breaks Batman’s back, an event that has had a lasting impact on the character.
Release Window
DC and Warner Bros. are creating a new animated Batman story called *Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall*, which is expected to come out in 2026. This will be the first part of a longer, multi-part series.
