Robert Shearman, who used to write for the popular show *Doctor Who*, has shared his strong opinions about its current difficulties.
“Probably As Dead As We’ve Ever Known It”
In a recent interview with *Doctor Who Magazine*, writer Gary Russell stated frankly that the show is currently in its most precarious position ever. He compared the current situation to 1989, when the series was cancelled but continued through spin-off novels and comics featuring the Seventh and Eighth Doctors (played by Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann).
Shearman pointed out that even when the show wasn’t actively being made in the 1990s, fans still had a sense of a ‘current’ Doctor. Now, however, he believes the series lacks a clear focus or leading character, so anything new feels like a look back at the past rather than something fresh.
According to Shearman, anything *Doctor Who* creates from now on will inevitably feel like a step back. Previously, with the New Adventures and BBC Books, fans knew they were getting stories featuring the current Doctor – whether it was McCoy or McGann.
Series Finale Left Narrative in Limbo
Shearman feels the series finale, *The Reality War*, ended the show on an unresolved note. The unexpected regeneration and guest appearance by Billie Piper as Rose Tyler, a decision made by showrunner Russell T Davies, have further complicated the show’s timeline and continuity.
Shearman pointed out that there’s no demand for novels featuring Billie Piper as the Doctor, simply because most people wouldn’t understand the concept.
He described the ending of *The Reality War* as definitive, unlike previous breaks in the story which suggested more could come later.
He noted that the ending of *The Reality War* felt conclusive, something the show hadn’t achieved previously. He described it as a satisfying way to wrap things up.
A Franchise Without a Future?
These remarks from Shearman follow growing speculation that Disney+ may have withdrawn funding for upcoming seasons of *Doctor Who*.
With Russell T Davies possibly leaving, and no clear idea of who will take over as showrunner, the future of Doctor Who is very uncertain. Even if the BBC continues the show in some form, writer Barnaby Shearman believes it might lose the energy and vitality it currently has.
