As a big fan of ‘It’, I always found the different movies and TV series a little confusing when trying to follow the story chronologically. It jumps around a lot! So, I put together a guide to help you watch everything in the order the events actually *happen* in Derry, not just when they were released. It really helps make the whole story click!
Here’s a list of the different versions of Stephen King’s ‘It,’ organized by when the stories take place. It starts with the series set in the 1960s, then moves to adaptations that show events happening later with both the kids and adults. For each version, we’ve included information about where it fits in the timeline, what years it covers, and how it relates to the overall ‘It’ story.
‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ (2025–)
‘Welcome to Derry’ takes place in the 1960s and reveals the history of the town long before the story of the Losers’ Club. The series shows how the evil entity known as Pennywise returns about every twenty-seven years, and how its appearances cause fear and tragedy in the community. The show also explores how Derry’s organizations and families deal with these events and the secrets from the past that haunt them.
‘Welcome to Derry’ is a TV series that tells a story leading up to the events of the feature films. It explores the town of Derry in more detail, introducing new characters and expanding on the history fans already know. You’ll recognize places like the sewers and water tower, and see how events from the past hint at the mysteries the Losers’ Club will eventually face. Because it’s a TV series, the show can tell longer, more complex stories about a different group of people dealing with Pennywise and the strange things happening in Derry – and how the town often ignores them.
‘It’ (1990) Part I
This 1990s TV miniseries tells the story over two time periods, starting with the characters’ childhoods in the 1960s. We meet seven kids who call themselves the Losers’ Club and watch as they uncover a terrifying creature responsible for a series of disappearances in their town, Derry. The series focuses on how the group forms, the different ways they each experience fear, and their promise to reunite if the evil ever returns.
‘It’ (2017)
As a huge fan of the story, I was really excited to see this movie focus on the characters’ childhoods, and they brilliantly set it in the late 80s. It follows this group of kids, ‘The Losers’, over one intense summer in Derry. They start looking into a series of disappearances, and quickly realize something truly monstrous is lurking beneath the town, hiding in the sewers. It’s all about how they band together, investigate the mystery, and piece together clues from the town’s past to figure out where this creature lives and, ultimately, try to stop it before anyone else gets hurt. The movie really focuses on their detective work and how they come together to fight back.
The 2017 film ‘It’ focuses on the children’s story to kick off the new movie series. It introduces us to the seven friends and how they interact, explains how the monster uses fear against its victims, and finishes with them promising to reunite if it ever returns. A title card at the end makes it clear that the story will continue with the characters as adults in a future film.
‘It’ (1990) Part II
The latter half of the story jumps forward in time, showing the group as adults returning to Derry after about thirty years when the terrifying events begin again. The series switches between present-day scenes and memories of their first encounter with the creature, revealing forgotten details and unresolved issues. By showing both the past and present, the story creates a full picture of the creature’s recurring cycle and how the friends’ childhood promise evolves as they grow up.
‘It Chapter Two’ (2019)
‘It Chapter Two’ picks up decades after the first movie, with the Losers’ Club now grown up and living separate lives. When a new series of murders starts in their hometown of Derry, they receive a call that brings them back together. As they return, they begin to remember forgotten parts of their childhood, and these memories are key to defeating the evil that haunts the town. Each member of the group must confront their personal history to weaken the entity and prepare for a final showdown.
The movie weaves together scenes from the present day with flashbacks to the friends’ summer in the late 1980s, revealing important details we didn’t see before. It builds on the story established in the first film, explaining how the danger keeps returning, and highlighting the strength of the friends’ connection as they face a new threat. As the second part of this two-movie story, it finishes the characters’ journey that began with ‘It’ (2017) and fulfills the promise made in the town of Derry.
