11-Year-Old Sci-Fi Film Surges to Number One on Netflix in a Single Day, Ousts 2025 Hit

Viewers on Netflix are quickly falling in love with *KPop Demon Hunters*, the animated musical adventure following the demon-fighting team Huntr/x. Since its release in June, the film, created by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, has become a major cultural hit. Its popular song, “Golden,” topped both the Billboard Global 200 and the US Billboard Hot 100 charts, and the story has even expanded with a recent sketch on *Saturday Night Live*.

Recently, viewers on Netflix have been surprisingly drawn to an older movie. Just a day after becoming available on the platform, the 2014 sci-fi film *The Maze Runner* quickly rose to the top of the streaming charts. It’s the first movie in a series of three, adapted from the books by James Dashner.

The film centers on Thomas, played by Dylan O’Brien, a teenager who finds himself trapped in a treacherous maze with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. Along with a group of other boys called the Gladers, he has to survive the maze’s deadly challenges and figure out the truth behind their imprisonment. Directed by Wes Ball, the movie was a major success and is highly regarded as one of the top young adult dystopian science fiction films of the past ten years.

There’s good news for fans of the Maze Runner series. Disney originally planned new films as early as 2019, and in May 2024, a reboot was officially announced, with Wes Ball returning as a producer. This new installment won’t be a simple sequel or remake, but will continue the story in a fresh direction. While details are still limited, Dylan O’Brien, who starred in the original films, hasn’t been approached about participating yet.

Now that The Maze Runner is becoming popular on Netflix, it looks like a new wave of fans are discovering the series. This could mean we might see news about a potential reboot sooner than expected.
