I’m at New York Comic Con, and after being let down by the second season and finale of James Gunn’s *Peacemaker*, I contacted my sources to find out what’s happening with the DC Universe at Warner Bros.
Okay, so here’s a little something I’m hearing through the grapevine. Apparently, Zack Snyder is interested in returning to the DC universe, and if he does, he’s got his sights set on adapting Frank Miller and Klaus Janson’s iconic *The Dark Knight Returns* comic. It’s still early days, but that’s the project he’s reportedly keen on. I’ll keep you posted as I learn more!
Sources say there’s no chance Zack Snyder will return to direct further films in the DC Extended Universe’s *Justice League* series, and everyone involved has accepted that and moved forward.
I’m told if Snyder ever comes back to DC that he only wants to do The Dark Knight Returns.
There’s been talk that Netflix might buy Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), and with Zack Snyder now working at Netflix, some fans have hoped for a revival of the DC Extended Universe. However, recent reports suggest a Netflix purchase of WBD is unlikely.
Zack Snyder wants to end superhero career with The Dark Knight Returns
In December 2023, Zack announced he planned to conclude his time as a superhero with *The Dark Knight Returns*, saying it would be a faithful adaptation of the original graphic novel.
When WBD is sold, I’m told it could happen.
Zack Snyder explained that in *Watchmen*, Alan Moore reimagined classic superhero archetypes. Characters like Night Owl resemble Batman, and Doctor Manhattan shares traits with Superman, allowing for various interpretations and analyses of these familiar hero types.
Zack Snyder explained that *The Dark Knight Returns* felt like a turning point for comics, marking a moment when the medium truly matured. He described how the book, with its focus on iconic heroes like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, fundamentally challenged and deconstructed the superhero archetype, forcing him to re-evaluate everything he thought he knew about the genre. He considers it the greatest comic book ever written, and achieving a similar impact with *Watchmen* and *The Dark Knight Returns* would, in his view, represent a culmination of his work with superheroes.
