DCU’s Salvation World Will Only Use the Comics Concept

As a huge fan, I was blown away by the finale of *Peacemaker*! It really shook things up for the DCU by introducing this whole other dimension and a planet meant to be a prison for super-powered beings. Rick Flag named it ‘Salvation,’ because he genuinely believes it’s a way to protect us from the metahuman threat. Apparently, this is going to be a major storyline in *Man of Tomorrow* and even *Lanterns*! It’s actually based on a DC comic from 2007 called *Salvation Run*, where Flag and Amanda Waller did something similar with Earth’s supervillains. I was curious how closely James Gunn plans to follow the original comic by Bill Willingham, Lilah Sturges, and Sean Chen, so I asked him directly at a recent event. Here’s what he had to say…

I don’t think viewers should go in expecting a certain thing. The core idea is more important. While there’s a clear conflict between characters like the Joker and Lex Luthor, that’s not the main focus. What really stood out to me was the setup: Rick Flag Jr. and Amanda Waller decide metahumans are too much trouble, constantly escaping, and decide to eliminate them permanently by sending them to another dimension. Naturally, sending a bunch of villains to another dimension has consequences, and in this case, the only person currently there is a good guy who’s forced to fend for himself.

Don’t anticipate a major storyline focusing on Lex Luthor versus the Joker. The DC Universe doesn’t even include the Joker character at this point. However, James Gunn explained he’s always been drawn to the idea of a seemingly inescapable prison – one initially believed to be safe, but with underlying dangers hinted at in the comics and the new universe. He’s also fascinated by the potential to explore a new society formed by villains and other dangerous metahumans, which was the core appeal of the concept from the start.

James Gunn has stated his *Salvation* project won’t directly follow the comic book storyline, but we still expect some elements from the comics to appear. The comics often group morally gray characters, like Catwoman, with truly villainous figures, and Gunn has already confirmed Catwoman will be part of his DC Universe. We wouldn’t be surprised if even heroes with superpowers, perhaps even members of a team like the Justice League, end up banished to Salvation. We’re excited to see how this unfolds, beginning with the *Lanterns* series and continuing in *Man of Tomorrow*.
