Okay, so season two of *Peacemaker* really threw a curveball at us with Nicholas Hoult absolutely *nailing* Lex Luthor. Seeing him locked up after nearly leveling Metropolis was a great start, but the real surprise was Rick Flag (Frank Grillo) being forced to seek his help. They needed Luthor’s brain – and the skills of his scientist, Sydney Happersen – to locate this dangerous Quantum Unfolding Chamber Peacemaker had. By the end of the season, we weren’t just seeing Happersen working with ARGUS, but also Lex’s top henchman, Otis Berg, which felt… ominous. But James Gunn recently clarified in a press Q&A that this whole Lex/ARGUS situation is a powder keg, and Rick Flag is definitely going to be caught in the blast. It’s setting up some serious trouble!
Even though Lex Luthor is currently imprisoned, it’s become clear that he and his associates have infiltrated the government. Rick Flag made a dangerous bargain, and those rarely end positively. During a question-and-answer session, *Comic Book Resources* pointed out that Flag appears to be in a powerful position, but that dealing with Lex Luthor usually means Luthor ends up controlling the situation. James Gunn readily confirmed this assessment.
I really like Rick Flag as a character, but he’s definitely not the smartest person in the room. He consistently overestimates his own intelligence, especially when it comes to dealing with someone like Lex. It’s clear he won’t be able to handle the situation, and it’s going to cause problems for him.
Looking ahead, Rick Flag will likely need to depend heavily on Lex Luthor and his intelligence – he’s the second smartest person in the world, after Batman. It seems likely that by the time the story reaches its conclusion, Lex Luthor will be released from prison as part of a work program, directly assisting Rick Flag and ARGUS. They’ll require his skills to manage the Salvation dimension and deal with the influx of metahumans. However, Lex Luthor doesn’t like being told what to do, and it’s almost certain he’ll eventually take control of ARGUS, turning the tables on Flag.
Lex Luthor’s history in DC Comics provides a clear parallel. For years, he controlled LexCorp, making him the most influential person in Metropolis – until Superman arrived. Luthor repeatedly tried to eliminate Superman, always managing to hide his involvement thanks to his immense wealth. Ultimately, his arrogance led to his exposure as a criminal, though he cleverly avoided conviction by blaming an evil clone. He then leveraged anti-alien sentiment to run for president, regaining – and even exceeding – his former power. The Lex Luthor we’re seeing in the DC Universe seems destined to follow a similar trajectory; it’s only a matter of time.
