If you’ve been learning a new language recently, you’ve likely used the Duolingo app. It’s become incredibly popular – so much so that Duolingo’s owl mascot, Duo, is getting its own anime series called *The Final Test*, according to a report in *Variety*.
The company partnered with animation studio Titmouse, known for popular shows like *Big Mouth* and *Star Trek: Lower Decks*, to create a five-part anime series. This series is designed to highlight their updated Japanese language courses. Each episode is just one minute long, and you can watch the trailer for *The Final Test* here:
Duolingo’s new anime mini-series, *The Final Test*, will tell the story of how Duo, the Duolingo owl, and his friends became the protectors of users’ learning streaks – that is, the number of consecutive days someone practices. Duo is described as a friendly, determined character who communicates through text and app sounds. The series is voiced in Japanese but offers subtitles in a variety of languages including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Hindi, Korean, and Thai.
Duolingo launched in 2011 and has quickly become the leading language-learning app. It now offers 43 different languages. In 2024, Duolingo averaged 128.3 million monthly users, with nearly 10.9 million paying for subscriptions. If the new animated series is well-received, we may see more adventures with Duo the owl. The first episode, *The Final Test*, will be released on Duolingo’s YouTube channel on October 13th.
