HBO unveiled the initial trailer for *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* at New York Comic-Con, offering fans their first glimpse of the latest *Game of Thrones* prequel. The show is adapted from George R.R. Martin’s *Tales of Dunk and Egg*, stories set many years before the happenings in *Game of Thrones* and *House of the Dragon*.
Created by Ira Parker and Steve Martin, the series features Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and Dexter Sol Ansell as his apprentice, Egg.
This new series, unlike past *Game of Thrones* shows, will be more straightforward and easier to understand. The preview suggests it will center on the bond between the characters Dunk and Egg, following their journeys and friendship, and won’t involve the sprawling politics or complicated family conflicts of the original series.
Get ready for a new epic story! The first episode of #AKnightoftheSevenKingdoms, the new #GameOfThrones series, will be available on HBO Max starting January 18th.

The new trailer for the series emphasizes that you don’t need to be familiar with *Game of Thrones* to enjoy it. It’s being presented as a story focused on its characters, with plenty of humor, emotional moments, and a bit of intrigue—especially since the character of Egg is secretly of royal lineage. Viewers who like medieval tales might also notice echoes of the Arthurian legends.
The show still has elements that fans of *Game of Thrones* will enjoy – including realistic language, dark humor, and witty, often blunt, conversations. For example, in one scene, someone mistakenly believes Dunk is a member of the Targaryen family and, after finding out he isn’t, rudely tells him to move aside.
This new series takes place in Westeros between the events of *House of the Dragon* and *Game of Thrones*, roughly a hundred years apart. It tells a previously untold story, offering a fresh look at Westeros’ history.
This time period could be a little confusing for viewers trying to understand where it fits in the overall story. While the Targaryen family is still in power, the conflicts from *House of the Dragon* are over, and the events that lead to their downfall in *Game of Thrones* haven’t happened yet.
Given that it’s set within the existing universe, *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* will likely be most enjoyed by those already familiar with the world. However, HBO believes the show’s more focused story and engaging main characters will also make it accessible and appealing to new viewers.
