The first look at *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms*, HBO’s upcoming *Game of Thrones* prequel, was revealed at New York Comic-Con.
The series is set to debut January 18, 2026 on HBO and Max.

George R.R. Martin’s Tournament Story
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms tells the story of Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg, set 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones. This series is set 72 years after House of the Dragon, in an era when the Targaryen dynasty still holds power, but dragons are extinct.
George R.R. Martin, the author of the *Dunk and Egg* stories, has long wanted to create a detailed tournament scene for television, and this story allows him to do just that.
George R.R. Martin mentioned at New York Comic Con that while tournaments existed in *Game of Thrones*, they weren’t a major focus. He specifically wanted to create outstanding jousting scenes, and cited the 1952 film *Ivanhoe* as a personal favorite for its jousting sequences.
Showrunner Ira Parker added, “There’s a jousting scene at night, which is badass.”
The Legend Begins
Peter Claffey stars as Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell plays Egg.
The main artwork for *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* shows Dunk and Egg with the phrase, “A tall tale that became legend.” George R.R. Martin hinted that the sixth episode will be a crucial moment for the characters, and he’s planning to adapt the next story, *The Sworn Sword*, if this series is successful.
