Fans are now questioning what will happen to Jonathan Majors‘ character, Kang the Conqueror, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following recent events.
Jonathan Majors first played He Who Remains, a version of the character Kang, in Season 1 of *Loki*. He then reprised the role as Kang in the movie *Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania*, and later returned in Season 2 of *Loki* as another variant named Victor Timely.
I was so excited when I first heard Marvel’s plans! They originally intended Kang the Conqueror to be the big bad of the entire Multiverse Saga, building him up as this huge, overarching villain we’d see in lots of different movies. It felt like they were really setting the stage for something epic.
In early 2023, legal issues for Jonathan Majors created doubts about his future with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He was arrested following accusations of assault made by his ex-girlfriend.
Even though he wasn’t convicted on all counts, the judge ordered him to complete probation and a program for domestic violence. Following this, Marvel reportedly decided to change its plans for the Kang character arc.
During San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Marvel announced that Doctor Doom will be the primary villain in the next *Avengers* film, titled *Avengers: Doomsday*, replacing Kang in that role.
Even after recent difficulties, Jonathan Majors suggested he might return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In an interview with *The Sun U.S.* in September, he playfully avoided a direct answer, pointing out that the multiverse creates many possibilities. He also expressed his appreciation for the fans who are hoping to see him reprise his role.
Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, explained that plans for Doctor Doom were already underway before the legal problems involving Jonathan Majors arose.
Feige explained that they had already begun to understand Kang wasn’t on the same level as Thanos, even before the recent issues with the actor who played him.
Feige explained that with Marvel now owning the rights to characters from Fox, Doctor Doom is uniquely positioned to become the next big villain, comparable to Thanos. He revealed they’d been considering Doom even before deciding to move away from Kang as the main threat, and he’d even discussed the possibility with Robert Downey Jr. before *Ant-Man 3* was released.
It’s currently unknown if Jonathan Majors will continue playing Kang in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the Multiverse concept leaves the possibility of his return open, and many fans are hoping to see him reprise the role in future movies.
