The opening sequence of *Game of Thrones* is legendary, with its sweeping view of the fantasy world becoming a memorable part of the show. *House of the Dragon* continued this tradition by using the same incredible theme music. However, HBO’s next *Game of Thrones* prequel, *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms*, will be different – it won’t have an opening title sequence at all, and there’s a good reason for that.
Ira Parker, the showrunner for *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms*, recently spoke with *Entertainment Weekly* about how the new series will differ from *Game of Thrones* and *House of the Dragon*. While those shows focused on the stories of powerful families across vast lands, *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* will be a smaller, more personal story. It won’t include any dragons and will center on the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall, a renowned knight, and his young squire, known as “Egg.”
The upcoming show will largely feature interactions with everyday people in the world it’s set in. According to Parker, they kept the focus small and personal, with every decision guided by the character of Dunk. He explained to EW that they channeled Dunk’s personality into all aspects of the show, including the opening titles.
Parker chose to skip a traditional opening title sequence, even one as elaborate as the one from *Game of Thrones*. When the show premieres in early 2025, viewers will simply see a title card with old-style lettering after the episode’s opening scene. This is a significant departure from the openings of shows like *House of the Dragon*, which will continue to use a more elaborate sequence when it returns for its third season.
Parker’s decision is completely understandable. He believes the show, and its main character, wouldn’t fit with a showy opening. As Parker put it, the character is straightforward and uncomplicated – he’s not someone who needs a lot of flashiness.
The short opening sequence also signals to viewers that this show will be unlike anything they’ve seen before in the world of Westeros. While it felt like the right choice, it wasn’t an easy one, according to Parker, who described it as the most stressful decision he made while working on the series. He emphasized that the change wasn’t made casually, but was ultimately necessary for the show’s direction.
That’s when you truly realize you made the correct decision. Acting with integrity, even when it’s difficult, is exactly what Ser Duncan always does.
