Marvel’s recent Ultimate Comics line, which began a few years ago as a fresh take on their popular early 2000s series, is coming to a close. Writer Jonathan Hickman launched the line with a new vision for classic heroes, starting with *Ultimate Spider-Man*, featuring a Peter Parker in his late 30s balancing family life with superheroics. This was followed by successful titles like *Ultimate X-Men*, *The Ultimates*, *Ultimate Black Panther*, and *Ultimate Wolverine*. However, *Popverse* reports that all Ultimate titles will conclude with an event called *Ultimate Endgame* in early 2026.
The *Ultimate Spider-Man* comic series is concluding with its 24th issue. Other titles in the *Ultimate* line will also end soon: *Ultimate Black Panther* in January 2026, *Ultimate X-Men* in February 2026, and *The Ultimates* in April 2026. *Ultimate Wolverine* will finish with issue 16 in April, and the entire line will wrap up with *Ultimate Endgame #5* that same month. According to Marvel’s editor-in-chief, C.B. Cebulski, this is the definite end of the *Ultimate* line, even if the comics are selling well. He insists they’re being truthful about this decision. However, some characters and storylines from the *Ultimate Universe*, which unfolded in real time, will be incorporated into the main Marvel Universe (known as the 616 Universe), though details about what those will be remain unknown.
It seems the current comic line is ending because writer Jonathan Hickman included a clause in his contract stating it would conclude when his story finished. This is different from his previous major Marvel project, the X-Men’s Krakoan era, which was also intended to end when he left the franchise. However, Marvel continued that storyline for several years, and some feel it suffered as a result. The original ‘Ultimate’ comic line was very successful, but it continued long after it probably should have. Perhaps Marvel is trying to prevent a similar situation this time around.
In a fresh take on the story, Hickman’s reimagining reveals that the new reality was crafted by Reed Richards from the 2000s Ultimate universe, known as the Maker, who became a villain in the process. After stripping away the original backgrounds of many superheroes, he seized power as the Imperator. Though Marvel’s recent overhaul of its characters seems to be concluding, DC’s Absolute line is thriving and shows no signs of stopping. DC President Jim Lee has confirmed his commitment to continuing this alternate universe featuring Batman, Superman, and other iconic heroes, giving comic book fans at least one alternate world to enjoy even as Marvel’s comes to an end.
