The new season has been very poorly received by critics. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 22% critic score based on 27 reviews, and viewers gave it a 54% rating from over 500 votes.

Reviewers found the season too long and criticized its graphic violence and historical inaccuracies. They also felt that some self-referential elements were distracting. Charlie Hunnam’s acting received varied reactions, with some liking it and others not.
One reviewer mentioned that some of the storylines weren’t believable, and the attempts to reference the story itself felt unnatural.
Even though critics didn’t love it, the show was a hit with audiences. Netflix reported 12.2 million views in its first week, adding up to 90.6 million hours of watch time. This made it one of the top 10 shows on the platform that week, only slightly behind *Wayward*.
A fourth season of Monster, based on murder suspect Lizzie Borden, is currently in development.
