The death of Thjazi Fang directly kicked off the events of *Critical Role Campaign 4*. It brought together the thirteen new characters who are now embarking on this adventure. However, while Thjazi’s death started things, it’s the introduction of a mysterious artifact in the first episode that seems poised to drive the story forward. What exactly *is* the Stone of Nightsong, and how has it already affected the characters? Let’s explore everything we’ve learned about this ancient Elven relic.
What Is Critical Role Campaign 4‘s Stone of Nightsong and What Does It Do?
During the first episode of *Critical Role Campaign 4*, Ashley Johnson’s character, Vaelus, explains the Stone of Nightsong. Vaelus, an elf from the Mournveil, says the stone was stolen from her by Thjazi Fang, and she’s attending his funeral to get it back. The other characters are confused, but Taliesin Jaffe’s character, Bolaire, successfully uses a Religion skill check to reveal more about the Stone of Nightsong.
Critical Role Campaign 4‘s Stone of Nightsong Was Created to Ease the Passing of the Elves
Okay, so Brennan Lee Mulligan dropped a fascinating detail during the show – the Stone of Nightsong isn’t just some magical object, it’s actually the creation of a celestial being. And this celestial wasn’t just *any* celestial, but one who served Sylandri, the elven creator goddess. Apparently, Sylandri is also the goddess of life specifically within the woodlands, which adds a whole new layer to the stone’s significance. It’s a really clever bit of world-building, honestly.
Sylandri, a goddess, gave immortality to her elven children. This means elves don’t die from old age or illness, and can live forever—unless they are killed by accident or injury. However, Sylandri also foresaw that even elves could meet an untimely end, so she created the Stone of Nightsong as a safeguard.
The Stone of Nightsong from *Critical Role Campaign 4* helps elves pass away peacefully. It allows their spirits to reach a tranquil afterlife, a special garden created for them, without suffering. According to Mulligan, spirits normally journey through a difficult place called the Tenebral Reaches after death—a dark and frightening experience. However, the Stone bypasses this hardship, ensuring a smoother transition to the afterlife, which is essentially the realm of the dead.
Not Even in Death Are the Elves Made to Feel Pain
The Stone of Nightsong ensures that when elves die, their spirits don’t have to experience the darkness of the afterlife. Instead, a spirit of song and night quickly carries them back to the peaceful light of their eternal home. Sylandri, the goddess of life, loved her elven children so much that she protected their souls from darkness and pain, even in the face of death.
What Does the Stone of Nightsong Look Like?
Ashley Johnson’s character, Vaelus, casually calls the Stone of Nightsong just a small, ordinary stone. But, lore reveals it was made after the death of a powerful, immortal being – a celestial with nightingale-like wings, almost like an “Night Angel.” This celestial was destroyed during the Shapers’ War, and the Stone of Nightsong was created in its memory.
Thimble, a pixie voiced by Laura Bailey and a close friend to Thjazi Fang, recalls the Stone of Nightsong as a black stone with wings and incredibly powerful magic. When she attempts to sketch it for her friends, Brennan Lee Mulligan clarifies that the stone is a carved sphere with wings wrapped around it. Combining these descriptions, the Stone of Nightsong appears to be a black, spherical stone, intricately carved to resemble a nightingale embracing itself with its wings.
Why Is the Stone of Nightsong so Important in Critical Role Campaign 4?
Thjazi Fang Stole the Stone of Nightsong From the Elves, Perhaps Leading to His Death
The Stone of Nightsong’s importance remains a mystery, but it seems connected to Thjazi Fang’s arrest. He and Thimble acquired the stone just before he was captured, and it was their last known adventure – a trip to Vaelus’s homeland, the Mournveil. Now, someone who knew about the stone not only interfered with the rescue attempt for Thjazi Fang, but also stole the stone from him. This raises the question: was Thjazi Fang’s arrest in *Critical Role Campaign 4* actually a carefully planned event by someone who wanted the Stone of Nightsong for themselves?
We still don’t know exactly what happened, but here’s what we do know: right when Thimble was supposed to deliver a crucial item to Thjazi Fang – something that would save him from being executed – she was attacked by magic users. During the attack, the Stone of Nightsong was stolen from their hiding place. It seems very likely that these events are connected.
The Stone of Nightsong Has Been Stolen Again
It turns out the Stone of Nightsong was the target of a break-in. The fact that Thjazi Fang stole it from the elves originally tells us this stone is incredibly important – someone clearly thought it was worth a lot of trouble to get.
Ashley Johnson’s Character Vaelus Wants the Stone of Nightsong Back in Critical Role Campaign 4
Besides Thjazi Fang and his enemies, Vaelus, played by Ashley Johnson, is also searching for the Stone of Nightsong. As an elf, it’s natural she wants to retrieve the stone to help her people find peace. However, her intense desire for it suggests the stone might have hidden powers or a deeper meaning.
Taliesin Jaffe’s Character Bolaire Knows Something About the Stone
It appears Taliesin Jaffe’s character, Bolaire Lathalia, has some knowledge about the Stone of Nightsong, which isn’t surprising given he’s a warlock accustomed to magical items. He suggests talking to Vaelus about the Nightstone when they’re not at a funeral, and we’re eager to find out what they discuss.
We Feel Sure the Stone of Nightsong Will Be a Major Part of Critical Role Campaign 4‘s Story
We currently understand parts of the Stone of Nightsong’s history, but it’s still unclear exactly why it’s so important to everyone involved. We also haven’t discovered the full range of its abilities, or how different groups might use it for positive or negative purposes.
We’re certain the Stone of Nightsong will play a key role in *Critical Role Campaign 4*.
