Fans of *Game of Thrones* now have a new glimpse into the upcoming prequel series, *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms*, thanks to the release of a brand new poster.
The new show, coming to HBO and Max in January 2026, revisits the world of Westeros, setting the story roughly 90 years before the events in *A Song of Ice and Fire*.
The series is inspired by George R.R. Martin’s *Tales of Dunk and Egg* and tells the story of Ser Duncan the Tall, a simple knight, and his young companion, Egg, who eventually becomes King Aegon V Targaryen.
HBO says the new series will be a realistic, character-focused story taking place in the world of *Game of Thrones*, but hundreds of years earlier, before the battles for the Iron Throne began.
Peter Claffey will portray Ser Duncan the Tall, and Dexter Sol Ansell will play Egg. The series will also feature Finn Bennett as Prince Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Carvel as Prince Baelor Targaryen, Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, and Sam Spruell as Prince Maekar Targaryen.
Ira Parker and George R. R. Martin created the show, with Parker also writing for it. Parker previously worked on *House of the Dragon*, another prequel to *Game of Thrones*. Martin is also an executive producer, helping to make sure the series remains faithful to his original tales.
I remember hearing about this project way back in early 2021, and it was exciting news! But it took a while, and HBO finally officially gave it the go-ahead in April 2023. I was thrilled when I heard!
Owen Harris, the director behind episodes of Black Mirror, oversaw the first three episodes of the series, establishing its overall style. Sarah Adina Smith then directed the final three episodes, finishing the six-episode season.
The show was cast throughout 2024, and filming started in June in Belfast, Northern Ireland – the same city used for much of *Game of Thrones*. According to sources at HBO, filming finished in September 2024.
HBO has confirmed that *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* will premiere in January 2026 and is expected to be one of their major fantasy releases that year.
