As a huge film fan, I’ve always considered Ridley Scott to be a true master – the guy behind films like *Alien*, *Blade Runner*, *Thelma & Louise*, and *Gladiator*, just to name a few. Apparently, he’s quite confident in his own work, and, according to a recent *Variety* article, he’s not exactly impressed with what’s happening in cinema today. He recently spoke at the British Film Institute and didn’t shy away from sharing his thoughts – basically, he thinks his movies are fantastic and a lot of modern films just don’t measure up. Here’s what he had to say…
So many movies are made worldwide now—millions, not just thousands—and honestly, most of them aren’t very good. I believe a lot of modern films rely too much on special effects to cover up weak storylines. The most important thing is to start with a strong script!
Ridley Scott is known for being direct, so we asked him what he honestly thought. But beyond his critical view of many modern films, what does *he* watch to relax? Surprisingly, he mostly revisits his own movies. He admits it’s a bit strange, but he’s been enjoying watching his older work and believes they hold up well. He even said they’re ‘pretty good!’ and haven’t aged. He specifically mentioned *Black Hawk Down* as a personal favorite.
I was really curious to hear what Sir Ridley Scott thought about current Hollywood films, and his answer was pretty blunt! He said that every now and then, a genuinely good movie slips through, and it’s like a breath of fresh air. Honestly, after all he’s accomplished, I can’t blame him for having high standards! He’s earned the right to be critical, even if it means being a bit of a curmudgeon – it seems even the greatest filmmakers aren’t immune to getting a little grumpy as they get older, just like our own grandfathers!
