Nintendo vows to continue fight against IP infringement, be it by AI or people

Nintendo rarely comments on online discussions, but they recently released a statement to address claims made by Japanese politician Asano Satoshi. Nintendo stated they are not lobbying the Japanese government to create regulations around generative AI.

Nintendo has clarified that it hasn’t discussed generative AI with the Japanese government, despite recent online conversations. The company also stated it will continue to protect its copyrights, regardless of whether AI technology is used in any infringement.

Satoshi has since apologized for making these false claims and deleted his original post.

Nintendo has a long history of strongly protecting its creative properties, which can sometimes be annoying for fans. This cautious approach is now evident in their response to generative AI – while many other game developers, even in Japan, are quickly adopting it, Nintendo is taking a more measured stance. This caution likely influenced the recent deal to take Electronic Arts private, as convincing investors of potential cost savings was key to covering the company’s debts.
