Matthew McConaughey has hinted that he and Woody Harrelson would be open to reprising their roles in *True Detective*, but only if a compelling storyline is developed.
The actor mentioned he and Woody Harrelson have discussed the idea of playing their popular characters, Rust Cohle and Marty Hart, from the show’s first season again.
Matthew McConaughey recently told NME that the creator of the show, Nic Pizzolatto, has already discussed the possibility of bringing the cast and crew back together for another season.
McConaughey emphasized that a second season of *True Detective* isn’t confirmed. He explained, “There’s definitely interest, but I haven’t received a script yet.” He also shared that the original series’ writing was exceptional – particularly the dialogue for his character, Rust Cohle – and any potential sequel would need to be even better to live up to that standard.
He explained that both he and Woody Harrelson are determined to make sure any continuation of the story lives up to the quality of the first season. He emphasized it’s currently just a concept, and they’d only move forward if Nic Pizzolatto, the creator, wrote something they both felt was exceptional. He said it needs to be truly outstanding, given how strong the first season was.
The first season of *True Detective* premiered in 2014 and quickly became a major success for HBO, earning high praise for its compelling story, dark mood, and the acting of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Since then, viewers have consistently expressed a desire to see the two actors reprise their roles and explore their characters’ intricate relationship further.
The show is continuing with fresh storylines. Season 5 is currently being developed, with Issa López returning as the lead creative after her work on *True Detective: Night Country*. Filming is scheduled to start this year, and the new season is expected to premiere in 2027. There are also rumors that Nicolas Cage may be joining the cast.
