As a longtime Family Guy fan, I was pretty shocked to hear that one of the show’s most iconic recurring characters won’t be back. It’s been 26 years since we first saw them, and honestly, the news is a bit of a surprise. It’s sad to see a character I’ve enjoyed for so long leave the show, but I guess all good things must come to an end. I’m definitely curious to see how the show moves forward without them, and I’m joining other fans in reacting to this unexpected announcement. It feels like the end of an era!
The surprising news came from Season 23, which just finished airing on Fox. In the episode called “The Chicken or the Meg,” Meg gets into a scuffle with Ernie the Giant Chicken, who has been a frequent opponent of Peter Griffin for a long time.
The episode ends with Meg killing the chicken, seemingly for good. This time, unlike in past episodes where the chicken always managed to survive or reappear, there was no indication that it would return. It truly seemed like the end for the character.
Executive producer Alec Sulkin shared the reason behind the decision to retire the character. “I think the chicken has naturally reached its end,” Sulkin explained. He also mentioned that creating increasingly impressive fight scenes between Peter and the chicken was becoming more challenging for the production crew.
Richard Appel, also an executive producer, agreed, highlighting the well-known Simpsons/Family Guy crossover episode as a peak moment for the character. “Looking at that episode, it’s difficult to see how the story could be taken any further,” Appel explained, implying that the chicken’s storyline had come to a fitting end.
Those who enjoy Family Guy are used to seeing crazy, exaggerated fights between Peter and the chicken, so this is a big shift for the show. As Season 24 is planned to come back to Fox next year, audiences will be eager to find out how the series continues without such a well-known enemy. It’s a notable change and will be interesting to see what direction the writers take.
