James Gunn’s DC Universe is quickly becoming popular on HBO Max. The superhero film Superman is currently the most-watched movie, and the series Peacemaker is the most-watched show on the streaming service.
This double success shows how Gunn’s DC projects are dominating both film and TV charts right now.
Superman was first released for digital purchase on August 15, 2025, and then became available on HBO Max on September 19. The movie followed a typical release pattern: it played in cinemas for 35 days before being available to buy digitally, and for 70 days before it started streaming.
The movie became available on physical media – Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD – on September 23rd. These releases include extra content like removed scenes, a behind-the-scenes documentary, commentary from director Gunn, and other bonus features. Gunn shared that the early digital release of Superman was on purpose, allowing fans to see the film before the new season of Peacemaker, as the two stories are connected.
The plan was successful. Superman drew in 13 million viewers around the world during its first ten days on HBO Max, which was a new record for a “pay-one” movie since Barbie in December 2023. The release also brought people back to earlier Superman movies, like the 1978 original, Superman Returns, Man of Steel, and the documentary Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story.
Also, Peacemaker was once again the most popular U.S. streaming original on Whip Media’s chart for the week that ended on September 28th.
The show, featuring John Cena, began its second season on HBO Max on August 21st. This week, it climbed from the number two spot to become the most popular show, moving Only Murders in the Building to second place.
Here’s a sneak peek at the last episode of ‘PEACEMAKER’ Season 2, titled “Full Nelson”!
It will start streaming on HBO Max on October 9.
