Comedy Icon of the ’90s, Dies at 96

Dame Patricia Routledge, the highly respected actress most famous for playing Hyacinth Bucket in the popular comedy Keeping Up Appearances, has died at the age of 96. Her representative stated she passed away peacefully in her sleep, with family and friends nearby. She will be greatly missed.

As a movie and TV lover, I always remember Patricia Routledge with a smile. She had such an incredible career, really shining on stage, television, and in films. While most people instantly think of her as the wonderfully snobbish Hyacinth Bucket in the BBC series – and honestly, that role is iconic! – I also really appreciated her more subtle work, like in Alan Bennett’s television monologues. And I was a big fan of her as Hetty Wainthropp, the amateur detective in the BBC One mystery series. She was just a fantastic actress, truly versatile. It’s sad to see her go, but her work will definitely live on. You can find some of her work on BBC iPlayer.

Throughout her life, she remained a compelling performer, consistently enchanting audiences with her love of the stage and her dedication to live theater. She continued to connect with people through her performances, even in her later years, demonstrating a lasting passion for the art form.

Keeping Up Appearances, a show that ran from 1990 to 1995, really highlighted Patricia Routledge’s comedic talent and perfect timing. Her portrayal of Hyacinth Bucket made the character a truly memorable and iconic part of British comedy.

Her over-the-top snobbery and constant focus on how others saw her made the character immediately memorable and provided plenty of iconic lines. As Routledge explained when discussing the part, “She’s an absolute monster and I enjoyed playing her enormously.”

She became very well-known for her work, and in 1996, the BBC’s 60th anniversary awards named her the nation’s favorite actress. Both those who worked with her and her fans have praised the impact she had. Roy Clarke, who created Keeping Up Appearances, stated, “She elevated my scripts with her incredible skills. I can only admire her talent and mourn its loss.”

As a fan, I was really moved by what Jon Petrie, the BBC’s director of comedy, had to say about Patricia Routledge. He called her “an actor of remarkable range”, and rightly so! He also pointed out that her role as Hyacinth Bucket is now one of the most famous and memorable performances in British comedy. He explained that “Hyacinth became part of the national conversation; instantly recognisable, endlessly quotable, and loved around the world,” and I couldn’t agree more – she really did become a cultural icon!

In addition to her work on TV, Routledge was a well-known stage actress, appearing in a variety of shows – from musicals to classic plays. People of all ages admired her talent and ability to play many different roles, and she motivated numerous actors and writers through her commitment to her profession.

Her agent shared with me, “It was amazing – even at 96, Dame Patricia never lost her love for acting and for being in front of a live audience. And it’s so wonderful that people of all ages kept discovering her through her classic TV roles. She’ll be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all of us who were devoted fans around the world.” I always felt a real connection to her work, and it’s incredibly sad to hear of her passing.

Dame Patricia Routledge will be remembered for her remarkable humor, skill, and dedication to acting. She delighted countless people with her memorable roles, and her talent will continue to be celebrated for many years to come.
