Keanu Reeves Teases Major Progress on ‘Constantine 2’ Script

Keanu Reeves shared some good news with fans about Constantine 2. It seems the sequel to the 2005 supernatural thriller, which has been anticipated for a long time, is now moving forward. After several years of doubt, the project appears to be gaining momentum.

During a recent conversation with Fandango, the 61-year-old actor shared that progress is being made on the project. “We’re optimistic. A new version of the script arrived, and we plan to present it to the studio, hoping they approve,” Reeves explained.

As a huge movie buff, hearing his comment really gave me hope! It’s one of the most encouraging signs I’ve seen that this project is still alive and kicking and actually making progress. I was starting to worry, but this definitely changes things!

Creating a follow-up to Constantine has taken a considerable amount of time. Discussions regarding continuing the story of John Constantine have been happening for over ten years.

Way back in 2012, Guillermo del Toro committed to making a Justice League Dark film, which would have included Constantine, but the project was ultimately cancelled. More recently, in both 2019 and 2021, Reeves mentioned he would gladly reprise the role if the opportunity arose.

News of Constantine 2 being officially in development at Warner Bros. didn’t surface until September 2022, as reported by Deadline Hollywood. Keanu Reeves was set to return as the world-weary demon hunter, with Francis Lawrence again directing and Akiva Goldsman handling the screenplay. J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella joined the project as producers.

In early 2023, Reeves mentioned that he’d talked with James Gunn, a co-head at DC Studios, and Gunn confirmed the sequel was still in development. The movie is expected to be a part of DC’s Elseworlds series, meaning its story will exist separately from the main DC Universe.

I was so relieved to hear that Lawrence, Reeves, and Goldsman were planning to get together and really refine the story as soon as the writers’ strike was over. It meant things were moving again! And then, in 2024, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura gave us even better news – the script was finally finished! That felt like a huge step forward for the project, and honestly, it got me really excited about what was to come.

Reeves stated that by February 2025, he and Lawrence had completed a story they felt good about and shared it with DC Studios. DC Studios gave them the go-ahead to continue developing the script.

He shared that the next movie will continue in the same universe as the first one, but Constantine will face even tougher obstacles. Lawrence also noted that, after a long development process, they’re now closer than ever to actually bringing it to life.

Despite the success, the making of the film wasn’t always smooth. Actor Peter Stormare, known for playing Lucifer in the original movie, recently discussed the disagreements that happened during production. In an interview, he explained that Reeves didn’t feel the initial scripts were strong enough. “There was a lot of revision, because… I believe Keanu [Reeves] wasn’t pleased with the scripts and often didn’t like what the studio proposed,” Stormare shared.

He explained that the studio was pushing for larger and more spectacular action sequences, but Reeves was determined to maintain the somber, philosophical atmosphere that had turned the initial film into a beloved classic.

“Keanu said, ‘I finished working on John Wick. This film has a spiritual side. It focuses on the battle between demons and everyday people, and I really wanted to maintain that focus,’” Stormare explained. He also playfully mentioned he’d love to play Lucifer again, but acknowledged it might be difficult to recreate his performance after so many years.

After a lengthy wait, Constantine 2 appears to be getting closer to becoming a reality. Reeves’ dedication to the character and his commitment to staying faithful to the source material seem to be precisely what fans have wanted.
