How Do We First Meet Matt Mercer’s Critical Role Campaign 4 Character?

Matt Mercer’s character, Sir Julien Davinos, is one of the last to appear in the first episode of Critical Role Campaign 4. Only two more characters are introduced after him. Because he shows up so late, Sir Julien Davinos immediately feels important and weighty-he has a certain gravitas.

Sir Julien Is a Member of House Royce, A Vassal House to the Sundered House of Royce

Before we get to know Matt Mercer’s character, we learn about the world of Julien Davinos. He’s part of House Davinos, a family that serves the powerful House of Royce. (House Royce is one of the noble families in Dol-Makyar, the city where Critical Role Campaign 4 is set.)

Sir Julien Davinos arrives in a stunning golden carriage, elaborately decorated in a baroque style and pulled by four white horses. The carriage displays the crest of the Sundered House of Royce. Inside are Sir Julien Davinos and his lifelong friend, Lady Aranessa Royce. We discover that Lady Aranessa is the widow-or former wife-of Thjazi Fang, whose death brings together all the characters in Critical Role Campaign 4 to start their journey. Lady Aranessa and Sir Julien Davinos are traveling to Thjazi Fang’s funeral, and Aranessa is, understandably, very emotional… Sir Julien Davinos, however, does not seem affected.

Matt Mercer’s Character, Sir Julien Davinos, Is Not a Very Comforting Shoulder to Cry On

As Lady Aranessa mourns and weeps over a painful loss, Sir Julien Davinos offers little sympathy. He’s actually surprised by her reaction. Aranessa attempts to express how deeply she feels, but Matt Mercer’s Sir Julien Davinos argues that Thjazi Fang repeatedly prioritized his own ego over her affection, and essentially got what he deserved in Critical Role Campaign 4’s initial death scene. He points out that if Thjazi had remained the man she loved, he wouldn’t have faced execution, because no one has ever been unjustly imprisoned. Julien even tells Aranessa he will “protect you from your own unnecessary emotional pain, if need be.”

It was rather presumptuous of him to think he understood what emotional pain Lady Aranessa didn’t need to experience. She lets him know that, and they arrive at the funeral, finishing their initial exchange. This first scene with Julien Davinos really establishes what we can expect from Matt Mercer’s character throughout this Critical Role campaign.

What Makes Matt Mercer’s Critical Role Campaign 4 Character Stand Out From the Rest (A.K.A., Be a Hater)

So, why the label of ‘hater’ for Sir Julian Davinos? In Critical Role Campaign 4, we meet 12 main characters and many other supporting characters, and almost all of them (with maybe the exception of Ashley Johnson’s Vaelus) felt some fondness for the deceased Thjazi Fang. Sir Julien Davinos is different, though. In Critical Role Campaign 4 episode one, Matt Mercer’s Julien Davinos explicitly states, “I hate him,” when speaking about the late Fang – pretty clear hater behavior! But honestly, this viewpoint really sets him apart from everyone else.

Honestly, it really bothered me how Julien acted after Thjazi Fang died. He didn’t just win, he went out of his way to be cruel. I remember Matt Mercer, as Sir Julien Davinos, saying, “I look down at the well-adorned, well-remembered, well-beloved body of Thjazi, here in this warm hearth surrounded by the chattering voices of family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched, I can hearing the gentle occasional sobs and stutters of my dear friend Lady Aranessa, and just quietly look down upon him, ‘The only shame is I couldn’t watch you die twice.’” It was awful! And then, he actually spat on the body! He just turned around and walked away. Exhibit A, everyone. It was a truly disturbing display.

Furthermore, while Thjazi Fang is being executed, Sir Julien Davinos actually smiles as he watches the man die. This is a disturbing reaction, considering how many people are grieving. Julien doesn’t just seem happy about Thjazi Fang’s hanging; he appears to revel in feeling that way.

I’ve noticed something really interesting about Matt Mercer’s portrayal of Sir Julien Davinos in Critical Role Campaign 4. He constantly describes Julien as casually leaning on objects, crossing his arms, and wearing that knowing smirk. It’s amazing how much personality Mercer conveys without explicitly *telling* us anything about Julien’s attitude – he just *shows* us, and it’s brilliant. We don’t even need to point it out; it’s just *there*.

What Do We Know About Sir Julien Davinos’ Backstory?

Most people who express negativity aren’t naturally that way; life experiences shape them. So far, we only know a small amount about the history of Sir Julien Davinos, revealed through details Matt Mercer has included in his character portrayal and information Brennan Lee Mulligan, the game’s Dungeon Master, has shared.

Everyone remembers Sir Julien Davinos as a hero from the battle of Maharlean Falls – he’s the one who defeated Thjazi Fang. However, it seems like people are starting to forget just how glorious his victory was, and his story is fading with time.

Lady Aranessa speaks of Sir Julien, stating, “You unseated my husband from his horse and saw that he faced the consequences.” However, Thaisha Lloy, the mother of Halandil Fang’s children, feels differently. She says, “You’re a dishonest and despicable person, a traitor who abandoned his father and family in a desperate attempt to achieve greatness… I don’t hate you, I feel sorry for you, if such a severe betrayal of your own family is what it takes for you to improve your situation.”

However, Sir Julien views his past in a different light-as Matt Mercer explains in Critical Role Campaign 4, episode one, “My father’s actions brought shame upon our family, but I restored our honor. Your ancestors betrayed those who had aided him, and he required a firm lesson-I simply possessed the bravery to deliver it.”

We’ll have to wait and see what Sir Julien Davinos’ family life is like. However, Thaisha offers some intriguing insights into Julien’s connection to the fae. She tells Julien, “What good has it done you? The path to Fairie remains blocked, and only the efforts of my people give you even a small chance of regaining your power.” We expect to understand the implications of this statement soon.

What Are Sir Julien Davinos’ Relationships with the Rest of the Characters?

We’re familiar with how Matt Mercer’s Julien Davinos interacted with Thjazi Fang – it wasn’t good. But what about his relationships with other characters? What are they like?

Generally, Thaisha is known to strongly dislike Julien. As a druid, she causes all the plants around him to wither and die whenever he enters a room. However, their connection goes much deeper than simple dislike. It turns out that Thaisha’s lost son is currently an apprentice under Sir Julien. Julien informs Thaisha that her son is developing into a skilled soldier “because I have been his teacher.” In return, Thaisha vows that if anything were to happen to him, she will brutally attack Julien.

Aside from that, it seems like many of the other characters aren’t particularly fond of Julien, though we haven’t yet had a clear look at those relationships.

What Are Sir Julien Davinos’ Stats and Ability Scores in Critical Role Campaign 4?

Let’s break down the character stats for Matt Mercer’s character in Critical Role Campaign 4, specifically from episode one. Sir Julien Davinos possesses these ability scores:

Julien is surprisingly resilient, but he doesn’t seem to have much common sense… It’s noticeable. We’re questioning his charisma score, considering how quickly he’s managed to upset people with limited screen time. Though, we have to admit, we’re slightly charmed! We’re still skeptical about it, though. It’s definitely something to watch.

We also found out that Matt Mercer’s Critical Role Campaign 4 character has 39 Hit Points (HP) and an Armor Class (AC) of 16. That’s a really good AC and a large amount of HP – something he definitely needs, considering how many people are constantly trying to take him down.

What Does Matt Mercer’s Critical Role Campaign 4 Character Look Like?

So, I’ve been trying to picture Sir Julien Davinos, and here’s what we know about Matt Mercer’s character from Critical Role Campaign 4. He’s a human man, freshly into his 30s. Physically, he’s described as lanky but well-built, and he’s always seen in the military uniform of House Davinos – they’re a vassal house under Royce. It’s a dark purple and grey uniform with red detailing. He’s got this amazing, intricate silver paldron – that’s a shoulder piece – on his right side. And draped over his other shoulder is a short, dark green cape, covered in really detailed vine and flower designs. Finally, he carries a sheathed rapier on his left hip.

I’ve always been struck by Julien’s appearance – he’s got this amazing head of heavily curly black hair that just cascades down his shoulders. He often carries himself with a stern, stoic expression, which is really compelling, but he’s not above a mischievous smirk when the moment is right. It’s a fascinating contrast!

Perhaps the most striking detail about Matt Mercer’s Critical Role Campaign 4 character, Sir Julien Davinos, is the elaborate, dark silver gauntlet covering his entire left hand. This armor is incredibly detailed, constructed from many interlocking plates. The gauntlet appears somewhat disproportionate when compared to Sir Julien’s slender build. We’re certain this gauntlet holds a special significance for the character.

What Shadow Is Clinging to Sir Julien Davinos?

Is Sir Julien Davinos going to face consequences for his actions? It seems like Critical Role Campaign 4 is suggesting that Matt Mercer’s character unintentionally triggered something by showing disrespect towards Thjazi Fang’s remains. Taliesin Jaffe’s character, Bolaire, discovered that “there’s an Orcish tradition – all those candles, coins, and offerings mean Thjazi Fang is connected to an ancient way of life, honored with treasure, and under a magical protection. Someone has bypassed that protection, and now a dark omen – a shadow – is following Julien Davinos.”

It appears Bolaire noticed Sir Julien Davinos upsetting orcish spirits by being disrespectful to the deceased. This effect is explained as a subtle form of magic – the type often dismissed as folklore, old beliefs, or old wives’ tales. It’s described as something small and secretive that came into being and now follows Sir Julien.

What consequences will Sir Julien face? It could be a change in behavior, or something more significant. We’ll need to continue watching Critical Role Campaign 4 to see what happens.
