The initial trailer for Justin Lin’s upcoming film Last Days is now available, offering viewers a first glimpse into the story of John Allen Chau.
Chau was a young missionary who went to North Sentinel Island, where the Sentinelese people live – they are one of the most isolated tribes in the world. He tried to share his Christian beliefs with them, but unfortunately, it led to his death, and the story received global attention quickly.
Justin Lin directed the film, and Ben Ripley wrote the screenplay. It’s inspired by the 2019 Outside magazine article, “The Last Days of John Allen Chau,” penned by Alex Perry. Lin also served as a producer, alongside Andrew Schneider, Sal Gatdula, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Eric Robinson, and Clayton Townsend. The Gotham Group was responsible for developing the project.

Sky Yang stars as John Allen Chau in the movie, alongside a talented cast including Radhika Apte, Naveen Andrews, Ken Leung, Toby Wallace, Ciara Bravo, Claire Price, Dieudonné Ngabo, and Marny Kennedy. Principal photography commenced in May 2024 in Thailand.
The film first premiered globally at the Sundance Film Festival on January 28th. It will be released in US cinemas on October 24th.
Initial reactions to the film have been varied. Rotten Tomatoes shows that just 28% of critics gave it a positive rating, based on 18 reviews. Metacritic calculated a score of 40 out of 100 from 9 reviews, characterizing the overall response as “mixed or average.”
The trailer suggests a gripping and heartfelt story exploring themes of belief, fixation, and loneliness. It depicts Chau’s strong resolve to connect with the Sentinelese people, even knowing the risks involved.
Ever since the events unfolded, people have argued about what really happened. Some viewed Chau as a man motivated by his religious beliefs, while others faulted him for endangering both himself and the isolated tribe. The movie is expected to reignite this debate and present the story to a wider audience. It promises to be a thought-provoking portrayal.
