Batman Writer Mattson Tomlin Wants Spider-Man 4, Trying to Contact Sam Raimi

Batman writer Mattson Tomlin has publicly stated his desire to work on Spider-Man 4, envisioning it as a sequel to the films starring Tobey Maguire and directed by Sam Raimi. He responded to fans on X (previously known as Twitter) who are hoping for another installment, and even tried to reach out to Raimi directly.

After a fan page offered funds with the message, “Here’s your money to write the script,” Tomlin responded with a concise: “Trying!”

After being asked again by a different user about reaching out to Raimi, he repeated his previous answer, saying: “Trying!

Tomlin’s Vision for Spider-Man 4

Tomlin elaborated on what kind of story interests him most:

To be honest, what I’d really like to work on right now is a Spider-Man 4 movie featuring Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man balancing life as a husband and a father. After working on the last eight films, I’m particularly interested in exploring Spider-Man’s role as a father.

This method would allow Peter Parker to grow into a more adult role, shifting the focus away from typical teenage problems and towards the challenges of juggling family life with the demands and sacrifices of being a hero.

Maguire and Raimi’s Recent Marvel Returns

It’s not unusual for fans to want more stories within the world created by Sam Raimi. Tobey Maguire famously returned as Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), and this was a huge hit with audiences and at the box office.

At the same time, Sam Raimi worked with Marvel again on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), showing he’s still a talented director of superhero movies. Many fans are hoping this could lead to him directing another Spider-Man film, but Raimi has stated he isn’t working on a fourth movie right now. He continues to be a popular figure with audiences.

What Spider-Man 4 Could Have Been

Sony initially intended to make Spider-Man 4 following Spider-Man 3 (2007), with plans for Sam Raimi to direct and Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst to reprise their roles. Several scripts were ordered, but Raimi decided to leave the project in 2010. As a result, the studio opted to restart the series with The Amazing Spider-Man, featuring Andrew Garfield as the lead.

Some of the ideas and rumors for Raimi’s canceled film included:

  • Vulture as the villain — with John Malkovich linked to the role.
  • Black Cat — with Anne Hathaway reportedly considered for the character.
  • A darker story that would push Peter Parker to the edge of his morals.

I always felt bad for Raimi. He later shared that he just couldn’t quite finish the script fast enough to hit Sony’s deadline, and ultimately, he had to step away from the project. It was a tough situation, and I really respected his honesty about it. He walked away rather than rush something he wasn’t happy with.
