Guy Ritchie returns with his trademark blend of crime and mayhem in the 2024 Netflix series ‘The Gentlemen’. If you enjoyed his 2019 movie, you’ll likely love this show. It captures the same energy, but expands on it, offering a more in-depth look at a glamorous and chaotic criminal world that’s distinctly Ritchie’s style. It’s a wild ride.

The story begins with Eddie Halstead, portrayed by Theo James. He unexpectedly becomes involved in a large criminal operation after inheriting his father’s property. James truly shines in this role, bringing a calm and collected presence that makes you want to support his character. We saw glimpses of this subtle power in ‘White Lotus’, but here he takes center stage, demonstrating his ability to carry a story. Alongside him is Kaya Scodelario as Susie Glass, a strong and intelligent woman who maintains firm control. The chemistry between them is fantastic-they’re at odds one moment, and working together the next. This constantly shifting relationship is incredibly captivating.

The talented cast doesn’t end there. Daniel Ings portrays Freddy Halstead, Eddie’s troubled brother who seems constantly on the verge of collapse. And Vinnie Jones appears as Geoff Seacombe, a steady and calm influence amidst all the chaos. If you’re familiar with Jones’s work in Ritchie’s iconic films like ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’ or ‘Snatch’, you’ll recognize he still commands attention, but this time he’s the reliable force keeping everything stable.

The success of this series comes from adapting Ritchie’s signature quick pace and intricate plots into an episodic format. Each installment intensifies the mystery, featuring clever conversations and unexpected events reminiscent of his films, but allowing the story more space to unfold. The setting of the English countryside-grand estates and lush landscapes-creates a striking contrast with the shady activities taking place. This visual element is compelling and enriches the narrative subtly. It looks fantastic and adds depth to the story without needing exposition. Every chapter draws you further in.

I’m not comparing this to the 2019 movie, which featured fantastic performances from stars like Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, and Hugh Grant. That was a completely different experience. This series is unique and stands on its own merits, offering characters with genuine complexity. We learn about their pasts and motivations, which makes them relatable even when they’re involved in wild situations. It’s not simply a repeat of old ideas-it’s a new and inventive exploration of Ritchie’s universe.

The show is a compelling blend of action, humor, and emotional depth, making it consistently engaging. It features the exaggerated, fun elements we’ve come to expect from Ritchie, but also grounds them with genuine feeling. In my opinion, ‘The Gentlemen’ successfully achieves its goals-it develops the crime story with both flair and realism. While not flawless, it’s an exciting and worthwhile experience.
