Mark Wahlberg Says He’s Not Ready for the MCU — His Reason Will Crack You Up

Mark Wahlberg doesn’t anticipate playing a Marvel superhero in the near future. The actor, who will be 54 this year, recently shared his reasons for not planning to join the MCU, despite having starred in many action films throughout his career.

He made these remarks while publicizing his new movie Play Dirty, set to be released on Prime Video on October 1, 2025.

While speaking with Entertainment Tonight at the movie’s premiere, Wahlberg shared that Play Dirty was produced by Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey’s production company, Team Downey. He also mentioned that Downey Jr. was initially considered for his role before he committed to playing Iron Man in the Marvel films.

When asked if Robert Downey Jr. could persuade him to become a superhero, Wahlberg answered frankly and with a bit of humor. “I’m not sure I’m brave enough to step out of my trailer wearing one of those suits,” he explained.

Wahlberg also talked about superhero movies overall. “I’ve enjoyed a lot of them, with Iron Man being my personal favorite. I think that movie really set the standard for good superhero films. But I never got the chance to consider being in one, so I didn’t have to make a decision. And honestly, I never actively looked for roles in that type of movie either,” he said.

It wasn’t the first time people had suggested him for a superhero movie. Wahlberg remembered being a possible choice to play Robin in Batman & Robin a while back, but Chris O’Donnell eventually got the part. Now, looking back on it, Wahlberg said he was actually relieved he didn’t take the role.

Throughout his career, Mark Wahlberg has appeared in a variety of successful films, including Boogie Nights, The Italian Job, The Departed, and The Fighter. He also played a role in two Transformers movies, which were known for their large-scale action-similar to many superhero films-but he hasn’t yet appeared in a movie from the Marvel or DC comic universes.
