Everything new coming in the Minecraft Copper Age update

The newest update for Minecraft is available today, bringing lots of fresh content! It’s the third of four big updates scheduled for 2025. This one is called The Copper Age update because most of the new things you can get are made of copper. Copper was first added to Minecraft in the 1.17 Caves & Cliffs Part 1 update back in 2021, but it didn’t have many uses then. This update fixes that, giving copper a lot more purpose with a variety of new copper items and features. It’s a significant expansion for this versatile material.

We’ll explain all the changes in this update, so you’ll know precisely what to expect when you start playing in your world.

Copper Golems

You might recall the Copper Golem from a past mob vote. It didn’t win then, but it’s returning now with a new and updated skillset compared to what was originally suggested during the vote.

You can now create a Copper Golem by putting a carved pumpkin on top of a copper block. This will generate both a copper chest and the golem itself. These useful creatures function as automatic item sorters – they’ll pick up items from copper chests and place them into nearby regular chests if those chests already contain the same type of item.

Be mindful, though, that like all copper blocks, these will oxidize with time. If you allow full oxidation, they’ll stop working and turn into statues. Luckily, you can restore them using an axe, or you can use a honeycomb to wax them, which will prevent oxidation.

Copper tools and armor

You can now use this widely available ore to craft basic tools and armor while exploring caves. Because you’ll find a lot of copper in the upper cave layers, it’s a helpful way to gain some early protection before you discover iron.

Okay, so this armor is better than leather, but not as good as iron. It’s pretty decent when it comes to how long it lasts, nothing amazing though. As for tools, they’re stronger than stone but not quite up to iron’s level – so they’re a good pick-me-up if you’re struggling to find iron right away. And get this – even my horse can benefit! You can now find copper horse armor in loot chests just as often as iron horse armor, which is awesome. It’s a solid upgrade all around, really. I’m definitely going to craft some copper tools and maybe even get my horse some new armor.

Unlike every other set of copper items in the game, tools and armor don’t oxidize over time.

Decorative copper blocks

The latest significant update for copper introduces a variety of decorative blocks, matching the options available for iron. You can now create copper bars, chains, chests, lanterns, and torches. These items will oxidize over time unless you apply wax to them. To make many of these new items, you’ll need the new copper nugget, which is obtained by breaking down a copper ingot – similar to how iron and gold nuggets are made. The copper lanterns and torches also introduce a unique light color to the game, emitting a green flame instead of the usual orange or the blue of soul torches.

Shelf

Shelves are a completely new addition to the game, working as both a nice visual element and a useful item. You can build a shelf using stripped logs, and it can hold up to three stacks of any item. Importantly, shelves will connect to each other if placed next to one another. When you use a shelf, it will instantly trade whatever item is in your hotbar with the items stored on the shelf, making it super easy to change your quick access items quickly.

End sky flashes

Though not the major End update many players have been hoping for, a minor adjustment has been made to the End dimension. Now, the sky will sometimes display a vivid purple flash, briefly illuminating the entire dimension with a purple hue. This effect functions across all game versions, but looks especially striking when Vibrant Visuals are turned on in the Bedrock Edition.

That wraps up today’s news, but the team at Mojang has already shared details about what’s planned for the winter Minecraft update as well, so there isn’t much time to relax!
