Minecraft Mounts of Mayhem adds ridable nautilus, zombie horses, and spears

The Minecraft Live broadcast over the weekend featured the team at Mojang revealing their progress on the final Minecraft update of the year, named the Mounts of Mayhem update. This update introduces a few new mobs you can ride, and also adds the first new weapon tier to Minecraft in a long time. It’s a significant addition to the game’s combat system!

Ridable Nautilus

Players have been able to find Nautilus shells in Minecraft for a while now – they appear in treasure chests and are sometimes dropped by Drowned. However, after a long wait, the Nautilus is now a creature of its own, and you can even tame and ride it!

You can tame a Nautilus by giving it pufferfish, which lets you put both a saddle and armour on it so you can ride it underwater. Plus, when you’re riding a Nautilus, you’ll have unlimited breath, so you won’t drown! This makes it much easier to explore and build things in the ocean than ever before.

However, not all Nautilus are welcoming. Zombie Nautilus can also appear. Though considered neutral creatures, they frequently spawn with a Drowned wielding a trident on their back, which makes them a very dangerous enemy to face.

Zombie Horses

The zombie horse is a bit unusual. While it’s been part of the game since 2013, you couldn’t actually find one in survival mode until now. With this update, a zombie riding a zombie horse can now spawn at night in plains and savannah areas. Similar to the rare skeletal horses, if you manage to defeat the zombie rider while keeping the horse alive, you can tame it and ride it yourself.

Just be aware that, like other undead creatures, this horse will be damaged by sunlight, so you’ll need to provide it with shelter – a roof will do nicely.

Spear

The Spear is the newest weapon in Minecraft, and it’s specifically made for use while riding animals or other mounts. Spears have a quick jab attack that can hit enemies from a good distance. However, their strongest ability is the charge attack – you hold the spear forward and charge at your target while on your mount. If you hit an enemy with this attack, it will knock them off their mount and inflict damage. The amount of damage depends on how fast you were moving when you struck them. It’s a powerful tool for mounted combat!
