It’s been about twenty years since the last The Simpsons movie, but Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie are getting a new one! According to Variety, Disney and 20th Century Studios are officially making a sequel to The Simpsons Movie. The movie is scheduled to be released on July 23, 2027. Interestingly, this Simpsons sequel is taking the place of a previously unannounced Marvel Studios film that has been removed from the schedule. This means there won’t be a surprise Marvel movie coming out between Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars.
What can we expect from the new movie? After 37 seasons – with three more already planned – it feels like the show has explored every possible storyline with these characters. However, since this is the first animated Simpsons film released by Disney, perhaps this sequel will be a full-fledged animated musical? With almost 800 episodes under their belt, they really need to make this movie something truly special and worth the price of admission. The original The Simpsons Movie earned an impressive $537 million back in 2007. The show was already 18 years old then, but in a time before streaming and the pandemic, people frequented movie theaters much more often. The question is, will that strategy be effective in 2027?
Disney often looks at how well a new movie does to decide if it would be a good fit for a future area in one of its theme parks. Currently, Universal Studios owns the rights to create lands based on certain properties. They have Simpsons-themed Springfield U.S.A. areas at both their Hollywood and Orlando parks. That license ends in 2028. So Disney might want to gauge whether the property is still popular enough to warrant its own section in their parks when the rights become available again. If this Simpsons sequel is a big hit, we expect to see Bart Simpson meeting and greeting guests at Disney World before long. Keep an eye out for news on this!
