Something I really enjoyed about the 2022 film The Batman was its embrace of the darker, more frightening side of Gotham City and its inhabitants. Batman doesn’t just fight crime; he intimidates criminals, playing on their fears. And the villains aren’t simply bad people – they feel more like monsters. The first film especially presented the Riddler as a terrifying, Zodiac Killer-type slasher. According to Colin Farrell (who plays Oz Cobb, also known as the Penguin), we can anticipate an even more frightening Gotham in The Batman – Part II.
At the Zurich Film Festival, The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Farrell about his ongoing work as the Penguin. “My part is even smaller in this movie, and that’s fine with me,” Farrell explained. “I’ve read the whole script, and I can’t reveal much. But it’s more intense, more frightening, and the consequences are greater. I’m really looking forward to seeing it.”
It’s a daring claim, especially since both The Batman and its spin-off show The Penguin featured remarkably complex characters and high-stakes storylines. Reports suggest The Batman – Part II will introduce villains we haven’t really seen on screen before. Many fans are predicting villains like Dr. Hugo Strange, Hush, or, most popularly, the Court of Owls. We’re also getting word that the next film will focus more on Bruce Wayne’s personal journey than his role as Batman, though it’s hard to say exactly how that will play out.

No matter who the bad guys turn out to be in The Batman – Part II, it’s great that the filmmakers are continuing with the most frightening depiction of Gotham City we’ve seen so far. While darkness is important for a Batman story, adding mystery and horror to the mix? Genius! Now we just have *checks calendar* a two-year wait. Oh no.
