As a huge cinema fan, I was really surprised to hear that President Trump is directly criticizing Hollywood studios for filming outside of the US. He’s actually calling it theft and is promising to put a 100% tariff on any movie made outside of the country. It’s a pretty drastic idea, and I’m curious to see how the industry will respond.
In a fiery post to his Truth Social account on Monday morning, Trump wrote:
Our film industry has been taken advantage of by other countries – it’s like taking candy from a baby. California, especially, has suffered because of its ineffective Governor. To fix this ongoing issue, I’m implementing a 100% tariff on all movies produced outside of the United States. Thank you for considering this. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!
Studios Shipping Jobs Overseas
Donald Trump made his statement as Marvel Studios decided to move production away from Georgia-a location previously popular for Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films-to the U.K. The decision is based on lower labor costs and similar tax incentives. Future movies, including the next two Avengers films and a new Spider-Man movie, will be filmed in the U.K.
The film industry in Georgia is currently experiencing a significant downturn, with spending on productions decreasing by almost 50% since 2022. This loss translates to thousands of jobs for American workers-not only in states like California, but also in traditionally conservative states such as Georgia.

Hollywood Hit With Warning Shot
Donald Trump has suggested a 100% tax on all films produced outside of the United States. This could significantly harm movie studios that film in other countries and then distribute their content in the U.S.-through cinemas, streaming services, or digital platforms.
Whether or not this policy will actually be put into practice or how it will be carried out is still uncertain, but the core idea is very straightforward: either create more movie jobs in America, or face consequences.
Movies filmed overseas
Besides Avengers: Doomsday, Secret Wars, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a significant number of films have been shot on location internationally.
Henry Cavill’s Voltron was filmed in Australia, and his Highlander movie is being filmed in the UK.
The Masters of the Universe film was filmed in the UK.
James Cameron’s big Avatar movies were also filmed in part in New Zealand.
Despite what some may say about Trump’s statements, film production continues in the U.S. For example, Disney filmed The Mandalorian & Grogu completely within California.
