Supernatural Horror Anime Will Return for a Second Season

The popular anime series, The Summer Hikaru Died, has been renewed for another season.

The news of a second season arrived soon after the first season finished airing in Japan, along with a new trailer and artwork hinting at what’s to come. A release date hasn’t been announced yet.

The series, which originated from a manga by Mokumokuren, started appearing on Kadokawa Shoten’s Young Ace Up website in August 2021.

The story follows Yoshiki Tsujinaka, a high schooler in rural Japan, as his friend Hikaru Indo is taken over by a strange, supernatural force. Yoshiki must deal with the resulting dangers and struggles to save his friend and preserve their bond.

Mokumokuren first came up with the story while studying for exams and posted some initial drawings on Twitter. The positive response online led to the manga being officially published as a series.

The manga quickly became popular with both readers and critics. The first book sold 200,000 copies in just three months, and people loved its art, story, and well-developed characters.

The initial anime series, created by CygamesPictures, was broadcast from July to September. Ryōhei Takeshita was the director and also wrote the series’ composition. Yuichi Takahashi was responsible for the character designs and led the animation team.

Masanobu Hiraoka worked on the animation for the series “Dorodoro.” Fans especially enjoyed the opening theme, “Saikai,” by Vaundy, and the ending theme, “Anata wa Kaibutsu,” by Tooboe. The show broadcast in Japan on Nippon TV and its network of stations, and was available to stream globally on Netflix and for free in Japan on Abema.

As a huge fan, I was thrilled to hear they’re making a second season! Everyone I’ve talked to loved the first one – the suspense was fantastic, and I really connected with the characters. The first season left us with so many unanswered questions, so I’m incredibly excited to see where they take the story next.
