Henry Cavill has starred in a wide variety of films, from large-scale superhero movies to smaller, suspenseful thrillers, and everything in between – including fantasy, spy stories, and historical dramas. While he’s known for leading huge box office hits, he also built his career with interesting roles in diverse projects. Looking at his work as a whole, it’s clear he consistently takes chances and explores different types of movies.
This list highlights ten films showcasing Henry Cavill’s versatility as an actor, spanning from his early horror roles to big-budget action movies. We’ll cover everything from his supporting roles to leading parts and ensemble work, including details about the filmmakers, locations, and the story each film aimed to tell.
‘Hellraiser: Hellworld’ (2005)
The latest installment in the horror series was directed by Rick Bota and primarily filmed in Romania. Henry Cavill stars as Mike, one of a group of gamers who receive invitations to a strange mansion after becoming deeply involved in an online game based on Hellraiser. The story quickly throws them into a terrifying encounter with the world of the Lament Configuration, but set in a contemporary environment.
The movie stars Lance Henriksen, Katheryn Winnick, and Khary Payton. It was released directly to video in most areas and is the eighth film in the *Hellraiser* series, continuing the story after *Hellraiser: Hellseeker* and *Hellraiser: Deader*.
‘The Cold Light of Day’ (2012)
This action-packed thriller, directed by Mabrouk El Mechri, centers on Will Shaw, whose family is kidnapped while on a sailing vacation in Spain. Henry Cavill stars as Will, desperately searching for his family, and the investigation reveals a secret operation connected to his father, portrayed by Bruce Willis. Sigourney Weaver plays a key figure in the intelligence world who becomes involved in the case.
The movie was filmed on location in Madrid and Valencia, and Summit Entertainment released it in early autumn. It features both English and Spanish locations, and relies on realistic, fast-paced chases through cities and harbors as Will attempts to retrieve a stolen briefcase connected to the kidnappers.
‘Blood Creek’ (2009)
I’m really excited about this new movie! Joel Schumacher is directing it, and it’s a spooky horror story originally called ‘Town Creek’. Henry Cavill stars as Evan Marshall, and he teams up with his brother to face a really creepy evil linked to an old ritual that happened on a farm way back in the 1930s. It’s cleverly done, flashing back and forth between what happened then and a modern-day attempt to stop it.
Okay, so I recently checked out this movie and Michael Fassbender is fantastic as this really intense Nazi scientist-he’s totally fixated on ancient runes and, get this, achieving immortality. Dominic Purcell plays the brother of the main character. It had a small release in theaters here, but it’s mostly available for home viewing now. What I really liked is how it mixes practical creature effects with these cool, almost dreamlike flashbacks that are inspired by old folklore. It’s a pretty unique blend!
‘Argylle’ (2024)
I’m so excited about this new Matthew Vaughn movie! It’s a really clever idea – it’s about a writer whose spy novels start coming true. Henry Cavill plays the hero *within* those books, this super cool, classic spy that the author has created. But the story also follows the author himself, along with Bryce Dallas Howard and Sam Rockwell, as he gets pulled into a real-life adventure because of what he’s written. It’s a story within a story, and I think it’s going to be fantastic!
The movie features a star-studded cast including Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Dua Lipa, John Cena, Ariana DeBose, and Samuel L. Jackson. It was initially released in theaters by Universal Pictures and later became an Apple Original Film, available for streaming. Filming took place in the United Kingdom with scenes shot in various European locations.
‘Night Hunter’ (2018)
I recently watched this really gripping crime thriller, also known as ‘Nomis’, and I was hooked from the start! It’s the work of David Raymond, who both wrote and directed it. Henry Cavill is fantastic as Detective Walter Marshall, and it’s fascinating to see him team up with a former judge and a special ops team to hunt down someone linked to a series of abductions. The story is cleverly constructed with lots of twists and turns – red herrings, people in witness protection, and keeping an eye on a whole cast of potential suspects. It really keeps you guessing!
The film also stars Ben Kingsley, Alexandra Daddario, Stanley Tucci, and Nathan Fillion. It first premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival and was then released in select theaters and for streaming. Filming primarily occurred in and around Winnipeg.
‘Immortals’ (2011)
Directed by Tarsem Singh, this action-packed movie tells the story of Theseus, a man chosen by Zeus to fight against the ruthless King Hyperion. Henry Cavill plays Theseus, who undergoes rigorous training to become part of a small group tasked with guarding the powerful Epirus Bow – a weapon Hyperion needs to unleash the ancient Titans.
The movie stars Mickey Rourke as Hyperion, Freida Pinto as the oracle Phaedra, and Luke Evans as Zeus. Released in 3D by Relativity Media, it blended visually striking sets with epic battle scenes and proved to be a financial success, earning a lot of money despite its moderate production cost.
‘Sand Castle’ (2017)
This drama takes place in Iraq in 2003 and centers on a small American team tasked with fixing the water system in a village damaged by fighting. Henry Cavill plays Sergeant Syverson, a Special Operations leader who joins forces with the team as their mission grows more complex and the village faces increasing security challenges.
Fernando Coimbra directed the film, written by Chris Roessner, and it stars Nicholas Hoult, Logan Marshall Green, Glen Powell, and Beau Knapp. Available worldwide on Netflix, the movie was filmed on location in Jordan, using the landscape for scenes involving military convoys, patrols, and a key engineering project central to the story.
‘Man of Steel’ (2013)
Zack Snyder’s film tells the story of Clark Kent, starting with his origins on Krypton, his upbringing in Kansas, and his eventual life in Metropolis. Henry Cavill plays Clark as he learns about his powers and faces off against General Zod (Michael Shannon) after a signal brings other Kryptonians to Earth.
Amy Adams plays Lois Lane, alongside Russell Crowe as Jor-El, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, and Diane Lane as Martha Kent. Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer wrote the story, and Hans Zimmer composed the music. The film marked a fresh start for the character and was released widely in the summer.
‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E.’ (2015)
Guy Ritchie’s film adapts the classic 1960s TV show, delivering a thrilling Cold War adventure across Europe. Henry Cavill stars as Napoleon Solo, a sophisticated CIA agent who must team up with Illya Kuryakin, a KGB agent, to find a missing scientist and a dangerous nuclear weapon.
The film features Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander, Elizabeth Debicki, and Hugh Grant, with a musical score by Daniel Pemberton. Filmed in Italy and the United Kingdom, it vividly recreates the early 1960s with authentic costumes, classic cars, and real sets, showcasing the style of Rome, Naples, and London.
‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ (2018)
In this film, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, IMF agent Ethan Hunt faces a dangerous situation when a mission to retrieve plutonium goes wrong, sparking a frantic race against time. Henry Cavill stars as August Walker, a CIA agent sent to oversee the operation, who quickly becomes a key figure as loyalties are questioned in cities around the world.
Tom Cruise stars alongside Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Vanessa Kirby, and Angela Bassett. The film featured a daring high-altitude, low-opening parachute jump filmed with the help of teams in the United Arab Emirates. Filming also took place in Paris, London, and New Zealand, and Paramount Pictures distributed the movie globally.
