Natalie Dormer won’t be doing any publicity for the new ITV and BritBox drama, *The Lady*, where she portrays Sarah Ferguson.
The actress stepped down from the show after learning more about the producer’s connections to Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender. She also revealed she’s donating her entire earnings from the series to organizations helping children who have been abused.
The issue arose after a 2011 email surfaced revealing Ferguson’s apology to Epstein. This is despite her earlier public statements claiming distance from him after he was convicted of sex crimes in 2008.
In her email, Ferguson told him he had always been a loyal, kind, and wonderful friend to her and her family. She also sincerely apologized, admitting she understood why he felt disappointed.
She had previously described her relationship with Epstein, including accepting money from him, as a serious mistake and stated she would never interact with him again.
Okay, so I just finished watching *The Lady*, and it’s a really interesting watch. It’s from the same people who made *The Crown*, which already tells you it’s going to be visually stunning and well-made. Basically, the show takes a true story and adds some dramatic license. It centers around Jane Andrews, who used to be a dresser for Sarah Ferguson, and the whole complicated story around her being convicted of murder back in 2001. It’s a fascinating, if tragic, tale.
Mia McKenna-Bruce stars as Andrews, and Ed Speleers plays her partner. The show was filmed earlier in 2024 and should be available to watch in late 2025 or early 2026.
In an interview with Variety, Natalie Dormer explained that she approached her role as Sarah Ferguson in ‘The Lady’ knowing it would be complex. She believes people are multifaceted, experiencing both good and bad times, and as an actress, her goal is to portray those complexities with sincerity and understanding.
After finishing the project, I learned things about Sarah Ferguson’s actions that I strongly disagree with and find unacceptable. Because of this, I’ve decided not to help promote it.
Dormer explained she donated her earnings from the project to two charities dedicated to helping children: the National Association for People Abused in Childhood (NAPAC) and the Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse, which is run by Barnardo’s. She made this decision because she is committed to the well-being of children.
She emphasized that her departure isn’t a reflection of her experience with Left Bank, praising them as “an amazing company to work with.”
Following the recent disclosures, Ferguson has stepped down from several charitable positions, including roles as a patron or ambassador for the Teenage Cancer Trust, the Children’s Literacy Charity, and the British Heart Foundation.
A spokesperson for Ferguson explained to the BBC that the email was written on advice from lawyers, in response to a threat of a lawsuit from Jeffrey Epstein. Ferguson continues to regret her previous relationship with him. According to the spokesperson, the email was intended to calm Epstein and address his threats.
