Fans guessed it a few episodes ago, and it’s now confirmed: the alternate Earth Peacemaker found through the Quantum Unfolding Chamber is controlled by Nazis. This seems similar to DC Comics’ Earth-X, a parallel universe where the Nazis won World War II and now rule America. We know there’s a resistance group on this Earth called the Sons of Liberty, but they might also be known as something else – perhaps a team of superheroes. Many believe the last two episodes of *Peacemaker* will bring the DC team, the Freedom Fighters, into the larger DC Universe.
To understand the origins of the Freedom Fighters, we need to look back at the early days of comic books in the 1940s. That was a time when superheroes were incredibly popular, and many different companies started publishing them. Besides DC Comics, there were publishers like Timely Comics (which later became Marvel), Fawcett (known for Shazam!), Charlton Comics, and Quality Comics. Quality Comics created heroes such as the patriotic Uncle Sam and Plastic Man, but like many publishers, they went out of business when the initial superhero craze died down. Years later, DC Comics acquired the rights to characters from Quality, as they had also done with Fawcett and Charlton. This leads us to the 1970s.
As a huge DC fan, it was so cool seeing the Multiverse really take off in the early ’70s! They started introducing all these different Earths. There was Earth-2, where the original Justice Society from the ’40s lived, and the really twisted Earth-3, home to the evil Crime Syndicate. Then they created Earth-S for the Shazam family. But one of the most fascinating was Earth-X, which appeared in *Justice League of America* #107 back in 1973. It was where DC put all the heroes they’d gotten from Quality Comics, who sadly went out of business in 1957. The really dark twist? In this world, the Nazis *won* World War II, and the war was *still* going on in the 70s! Luckily, there was a team fighting for the good guys – the Freedom Fighters.
The Freedom Fighters, a team led by Uncle Sam, became popular after appearing with the Justice League and even got their own 15-issue comic series. DC Comics established them as heroes from Earth-2 who moved to Earth-X to continue fighting against the Nazis. The team included characters like Phantom Lady, Human Bomb, the Ray, Black Condor, Firebrand, and Doll Man. Their series saw them briefly relocate to Earth-1 before returning to Earth-X. Unfortunately, the original Earth-X was destroyed during the *Crisis on Infinite Earths* event. Following this, DC integrated the Freedom Fighters into the history of the newly created Earth-0.
The idea of Earth-X has come back into popularity in recent comics, particularly in series like *Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters*. Grant Morrison’s *Multiversity* and other titles then brought the concept back to its origins – a world where heroes fight Nazis. This newer version of Earth-X features twisted, Nazi versions of well-known heroes, including a reimagined Superman and Supergirl as the sinister Overman and Overgirl. The CW’s Arrowverse explored this version in their “Crisis on Earth-X” crossover event. However, it seems James Gunn might prefer the earlier take on Earth-X, where the Freedom Fighters continued their fight against the Nazis even in modern times. Evidence of this can be found in the fact that some of the Freedom Fighters actually appeared as a mural in a Superman comic.

Can you name all the characters?

The Justice League’s headquarters features a large painting celebrating 300 years of superpowered individuals. It includes two heroes from an older DC comic line, the Freedom Fighters: Phantom Lady and Max Mercury. Fans are speculating whether these characters, along with others, might have ended up on Earth-X and continued their heroic work. The show has introduced a group called the Sons of Liberty, which could simply be the Freedom Fighters’ new name on this alternate Earth. Given James Gunn’s fondness for lesser-known DC characters, some believe Uncle Sam and his team might appear to help in the final episodes of Peacemaker, potentially offering a visually striking moment of Uncle Sam defeating a Nazi.
