Silent Hill f: Which difficulty should you play on?

Silent Hill f, like other games in the series and survival horror games in general, lets you choose different difficulty levels. You can adjust how challenging the game is to fit your playstyle. What’s unique is that you can set the difficulty for puzzles and combat separately, giving you even more control over your experience.

This guide explains the different difficulty levels in Silent Hill f, detailing what each one offers and recommending the best option for your playthrough.

Silent Hill f: Difficulty settings explained

Silent Hill f offers three difficulty levels for both its action sequences and puzzles: Story, Hard, and Lost in the Fog (the most challenging). Players can customize the experience by setting the action and puzzle difficulty separately, allowing for combinations like easy combat with tough puzzles, or vice versa, to suit their preferences.

Story mode makes the game easier: you’ll take less damage, do more damage to enemies, and won’t lose sanity while using Focus, even if attacked. Plus, visiting hokora (save shrines) completely refills your health and sanity for free, meaning you won’t need to waste items on healing near save points. You’ll also find more resources throughout the world.

Hard mode makes the game much more challenging. Enemies deal significant damage, often defeating you in just a couple of hits. They’re also tougher to defeat. Getting hit while concentrating will severely drain your sanity, and you’ll need to rely on faith – earned by making offerings at shrines – or consumable items to recover health and sanity. Resources like healing items and weapons will be scarce.

Lost in the Fog is an even harder difficulty level, but it’s not available until you’ve finished the game at least once. Once you beat the game on any difficulty, you’ll unlock Lost in the Fog, and you can access it by starting a New Game+.

As a fan, I really appreciate that all three difficulty levels for the puzzles are unlocked right away! It’s cool how the puzzles change depending on how hard you’re playing. For example, a puzzle like the Altar one is pretty straightforward on Story mode, giving you obvious hints. But if you jump into Lost in the Fog difficulty, it becomes a real brain-teaser with complex riddles! Some puzzles just get harder, but others are completely redesigned, so you’re focusing on totally different things to solve them. It’s a great system!

Silent Hill f: Can you change difficulty after starting?

You can adjust the game’s difficulty during gameplay to make combat more challenging or easier, depending on how you’re doing. If you’re playing on Hard or Lost in the Fog and repeatedly struggle with a particular fight, the game will ask if you want to lower the difficulty.

As a player, it’s good to know you really need to think about the difficulty level *before* you start! Once you pick easy, medium, or hard, that’s it – you’re stuck with that choice until you finish the puzzle or start a whole new game. So choose wisely!

Silent Hill f: Which difficulty should you choose?

We would recommend starting your playthrough on story difficulty for both combat and puzzles.

It’s natural to want a good challenge, and this game offers that with its different endings and how it changes each time you play. You’ll probably want to play through it several times. We suggest starting on the easiest difficulty for your first run, then increasing the difficulty on later playthroughs to keep things interesting.

If you enjoy a challenge, you can start on a harder difficulty right away. If it gets too tough, you can always lower the difficulty in later playthroughs. Just remember that the hardest difficulty, ‘Lost in the Fog,’ isn’t available until you’ve completed the game once. We still suggest starting on an easier setting and gradually increasing the challenge as you get better.

To unlock all achievements in Silent Hill f, you must complete the game on every difficulty setting. Finishing on ‘Lost in the Fog’ (puzzle difficulty) won’t count towards the achievements for ‘Hard’ or ‘Story’ difficulties, so you’ll need to play those separately.
