Borderlands 4 Switch 2 release date indefinitely delayed

The release of Borderlands 4 on the Nintendo Switch 2 has been postponed with no new date set. Gearbox, the game’s developer, stated that they need more time to finish development and refine the game before it’s ready for release.

We learned about the delay from the official Borderlands Twitter account. They posted a detailed message explaining that the game’s release has been pushed back, and a new release date hasn’t been announced yet.

We didn’t make this decision easily, but we want to give our fans the best experience possible. The game still needs more development and refinement to achieve that.

The game’s Switch 2 release date hasn’t been announced yet, but it will likely come out when cross-save functionality is ready. The company is currently working on adding cross-saves, and they want the two to launch around the same time.

Starting September 26, 2025, all digital preorders for the game will be canceled. You can cancel your digital preorder yourself before that date if you prefer. If you preordered a physical copy, your order won’t be canceled automatically. You’ll need to contact the store where you preordered to get a refund.

Borderlands 4 came out on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC on September 12th. It was originally planned to release on the Switch 2 just a little over a week later, on October 3rd. However, as of today, the game is still available for pre-order on Nintendo websites and in the eShop, and the official Borderlands website continues to direct customers to those pages.

Anyone following the development of Borderlands 4 for PC and consoles likely isn’t surprised by the delay. The game has been struggling with performance problems on all platforms. Digital Foundry found that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions can fall to half their target frame rate after extended play, and PC players have complained about optimization issues, resulting in a “Mixed” rating on Steam.

After disappointing performance and fan criticism, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford responded on social media with unusual posts, even challenging one critic to build their own game engine to prove their point.
