Noah Hawley’s *Alien: Earth* proved to be a standout addition to the 45-year-old *Alien* franchise, ranking among the best installments alongside the original *Alien* and *Aliens*. This is high praise, especially considering we also enjoyed last year’s *Alien: Romulus*. What really set *Alien: Earth* apart was its ability to expand the universe in unexpected and thrilling ways. The season finale, now available on FX, was packed with shocking moments that left viewers eagerly anticipating a second season. Here’s a rundown of the most exciting developments from the final episode, “The Real Monsters.”
Hybrids Can Control Synths
It’s now confirmed that Atom Eins, Boy Kavalier’s most trusted advisor, is actually a synthetic being. Following Kavalier’s orders, Atom tries to offer Joe, the brother of hybrid Wendy, as a new host to the terrifying T. Ocellus, the eye monster. He locks Joe in a room with the sheep possessed by the eye, hoping the monster will transfer into him. However, Wendy arrives just in time to rescue her brother, after the eye monster violently escapes its previous sheep host. (Rest in peace to the judgmental sheep!)
The truth comes out: Atom is a synth, leading to a fight with Wendy. However, things take an unexpected turn when Wendy demonstrates she can control any electronic device, including synths like Atom. She completely immobilizes him, and a disturbing detail shows his eyes still moving, meaning he’s aware inside his frozen body. This reveals the full scope of Wendy’s abilities: she not only commands the Xenomorphs, but also controls other synths, making her the most powerful and dangerous character ever seen in the *Alien* universe.
The Cyborg vs. Synth Fight
Okay, this episode was insane! It wasn’t just synths battling hybrids – we got a seriously brutal fight between a synth and a cyborg! Mr. Morrow, that Weyland-Yutani cyborg, managed to break out of his cell with some help from Joe and Wendy, and his mission was to steal the aliens for Yutani. But waiting for him in the lab was Kirsh! These two went at it, and for a minute there, it looked like Morrow was winning – he actually *broke* Kirsh’s back over a table! (Seriously, there was a ton of that weird white android blood everywhere.) But Kirsh, being part human, managed to turn the tables, choking Morrow out. So, for now, the synths are winning – Synths 1, Cyborgs 0!
Goodbye Evil Sheep, Hello Eyeball Zombie
It’s a rough go for Dr. Arthur Sylvia (David Rysdahl). He loses his job after refusing to erase a hybrid’s memory, and then Kirsh deliberately exposes him to a facehugger, resulting in an alien embryo implanting inside him. He doesn’t survive – a chestburster erupts from his body, leaving him dead on the beach. Things only get worse from there; his body is washed out to sea, then back ashore where it begins to decompose. To top it all off, the escaped eye monster takes up residence inside his corpse, effectively making him the first zombie-like creature in the *Alien* series.
Hybrid Domination
The season ended with a major cliffhanger! Wendy and her hybrid allies, along with her brother Joe, managed to defeat Boy Kavalier and his army on Neverland. She then imprisoned Boy, Dame Sylvia, the damaged body of Kirsh, Atom, and Mr. Morrow, making it clear she has the Xenomorph completely under her control. When Curly asks what their plan is, Wendy simply declares, “Now we rule.” This is surprising, as hybrids haven’t been shown to be in power in the original *Alien* and *Aliens* movies. In fact, the films never reveal who controls the Company. Could it be hybrids? We’ll find out if there’s a second season of *Alien: Earth*.
The full first season of Alien: Earth is now streaming on Hulu.
