Silent Hill f, true to the series, features puzzles that players must solve to advance the story, find useful items, and uncover the mysteries of the game world. The first puzzle appears when you initially explore the Dark Shrine, a shadowy place watched over by a masked figure.
This puzzle involves placing sacred objects on pedestals within an altar. Determining the correct placement can be tricky, particularly as the puzzle gets harder.

This guide provides solutions to the Altar puzzle in Silent Hill f, covering all difficulty levels: Story, Hard, and Lost in the Fog.
Silent Hill f Altar puzzle: Story difficulty solution
Before you will be five objects: a fan, a gourd-shaped container, a dead rat in a leaf, a kimono draped over a dead bird, and a dried fish wrapped in paper. Each object is tied with a cord and a specific knot. Matching knot symbols are on stands, indicating where each item belongs.
To solve this puzzle on Story mode, put the dead rat in the top left corner and the dried fish in the top right. Then, place the kimono in the bottom left, the vessel in the center bottom, and the fan on the bottom right.
Silent Hill f Altar puzzle: Hard difficulty solution
The Hard version of this puzzle is more challenging. You’ll need to carefully examine the items and match them to the symbols on the pedestals, which feature a tree, a flower wreath, a bamboo plant, a group of three flowers, and a group of three leaves.
Everything you need to arrange is connected to these symbols, either by representing them or having them printed on the item. For instance, the fan features bamboo designs on its wooden surface, so it should be placed on the bamboo stand.
The solution to this puzzle on Hard difficulty is as follows:
- The fan has bamboo printed on it, so it goes in the bottom left pedestal, marked with bamboo.
- The vessel has a flower printed on its base, so it goes in the bottom center pedestal, marked with three flowers.
- The dead rat is wrapped in a kudzu leaf, so it goes on the bottom right pedestal, marked with three leaves.
- The kimono has a blossoming flower print on it, so it goes on the top right pedestal, marked with a flower wreath.
- Finally, the dried fish has very subtle tree detailing on the paper covering the fish, so it goes in the top left pedestal, marked with a tree.
Silent Hill f Altar puzzle: Lost in the Fog difficulty solution
The ‘Lost in the Fog’ difficulty makes this puzzle even harder by hiding the clues. Instead of being shown directly on the pedestals, you’ll need to solve a riddle to figure out where each item goes.
Kudzu, respected by all and a leader of the people, was wed to Pine.
Plum, loved by all and always at the center of any group, was wed to Bamboo.
Chrysanthemum, living alone, learned from Kudzu and eventually became famous as a wise teacher in the East.
Let the prosperity of our clan be eternal.
This puzzle challenges you to determine where each item goes, using the clues provided. For instance, the Plum piece needs to be placed on the bottom center pedestal because the riddle states it’s “always at the center of any group.”
The solution to this puzzle on Lost in the Fog difficulty is as follows:
- Plum is the kimono, which is adorned with plum blossoms, which goes on the bottom center pedestal.
- Bamboo is the fan, which is adorned with bamboo markings, which goes on the bottom left pedestal.
- Chrysanthemum is the vessel, which has a chrysanthemum flower printed on its base, which goes on the bottom right pedestal, as it “studies under Kudzu” in the east.
- Kudzu is the dead rat, which is wrapped in a kudzu leaf, and thus goes in the top right, because Chrysanthemum studies under it in the east.
- Pine is the dried fish, which is tied with pine needles, and it goes in the top left position, next to its spouse, Kudzu.
