Stephen King, a renowned horror author, has given high praise to the forthcoming film *Black Phone 2*, stating that it surpasses the original in quality.
The follow-up film, directed by Scott Derrickson and co-written with C. Robert Cargill, will be released in U.S. theaters on October 17th, following its debut at Fantastic Fest on September 20th.
As a huge fan of the first film, I’m really excited about *Black Phone 2*. It picks up right where things left off, following Finney – the boy who somehow managed to escape the terrifying Grabber – and his sister, Gwen. It sounds like we’ll see what happens to them after everything they went through.
Ethan Hawke is back as the Grabber, and Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw will once again play their previous roles. Joining them are new cast members Demián Bichir, who plays Armando, the supervisor at Alpine Lake camp, and Arianna Rivas as his niece, Mustang. Jeremy Davies and Miguel Mora are also returning for this installment.
The project began with Joe Hill’s short story, originally published in his 2004 collection, *20th Century Ghosts*. After Derrickson showed interest in continuing the story, Hill offered ideas for a sequel, contingent on the success of the first film.
Director Scott Derrickson explained that the good box office results of *The Black Phone* were a key factor in getting a sequel made. Filming for the follow-up, initially known as *Mysterium*, took place in Toronto from November 4, 2024, to January 23, 2025, and Pär M. Ekberg handled the cinematography.
As a big movie fan, I always love hearing what Stephen King thinks of films, and he just shared his reaction to a sequel he saw. He actually said it surpassed the original! He wrote, and I quote, “It’s not as good as the first one. IT’S BETTER,” which is pretty high praise coming from him, and it’s really got me excited for its release.
The movie *The Black Phone* first showed at Fantastic Fest in September 2021 and came out in U.S. cinemas on June 24, 2022. It made $161.4 million around the world and received mostly good reviews, particularly for the acting, although opinions on the story itself were mixed. Following its success, director Scott Derrickson and writer C.H. Cargill created the short film *Dreamkill*, which was included in the 2023 horror anthology *V/H/S/85*.
