As a huge fan of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, I was really disappointed to hear ABC – that’s Disney, by the way – put the show on hold after his monologue on September 15th. It feels like a pretty strong reaction, and honestly, it’s a shame for all of us who enjoy the show.
During his show, Kimmel discussed how supporters of Donald Trump – often called MAGA – reacted to the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. He pointed out that they were attempting to distance the shooter from their group and were using the situation to gain a political advantage, which he considered a new low.
The suspension came after Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr, appointed by Trump, criticized Kimmel for what he called misleading the public. Nexstar Media also chose to stop broadcasting *Jimmy Kimmel Live!* on its ABC stations.
Social media users immediately responded to the news, posting screenshots of canceled subscriptions and using hashtags like #CancelDisney and #CancelDisneyPlus. One user explained they canceled their Hulu and Disney+ subscriptions because they felt ABC was giving in to Donald Trump and what they described as fascism, stating they wanted to impact Disney’s finances. Another user announced they were canceling their yearly trip to Disney World, emphasizing they were backing up their words with action.
The issue has also gained attention from celebrities. Tatiana Maslany, who stars in the Disney+ show *She-Hulk: Attorney at Law*, urged her Instagram followers to cancel their subscriptions to Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN. Misha Collins, formerly of *Supernatural*, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that he would be canceling his Disney+ subscription for the foreseeable future.
Jimmy Kimmel faced backlash from conservative viewers after he implied a connection between the suspect in the shooting death of a young man and the MAGA movement, even though investigators hadn’t yet established a motive as of September 19th. In an interview on Benny Johnson’s YouTube show, political commentator Ben Carr described Kimmel’s comments as deeply disturbing.
This event has ignited a larger conversation about freedom of expression, how much power politics has, and the impact of companies on the news and information we see. Disney is now under pressure to deal with public anger while also maintaining its relationships with politicians and other businesses.
