Starting in December 2025, Fortnite players will be able to create and sell their own items within the game, Epic Games announced. Creators will earn roughly 74% of the revenue from these sales between December 2025 and December 2026, though the precise percentage will vary slightly depending on the platform due to associated fees.
Starting in January 2026, the commission rate will decrease to around 37%. Epic Games will keep the remaining 50% to cover expenses like server maintenance, security, content moderation, research and development, and general operations.
So, Epic’s been saying they’ve been spending more money than they’re bringing in lately – basically, they’ve been operating at a loss. They’re investing heavily in stuff, but it’s not paying off *right now*, apparently.
Epic Games shared a graphic stating that, on average, Fortnite creators will earn more money from in-game purchases compared to Roblox creators. This underscores the intense competition between the two companies, which are both trying to attract developers to their platforms. This rivalry is expected to heat up even more later this year when HoYoverse’s Genshin Impact also enters the user-generated content market.
Epic Games is not only allowing creators to make and sell items within games, but also changing how they earn money. Creators will receive additional rewards for attracting new players or re-engaging previous players who then consistently make purchases.
Starting in November 2025, Epic Games will allow creators to pay for increased visibility on its platform. Epic will auction off spaces in a new “Sponsored” category, letting creators bid to have their content featured.
As a huge fan of Unreal Engine and UEFN, I was so excited when Epic Games announced earlier this year that they were adding AI tools! Even better, they said creators like me would finally get access to official assets from all sorts of popular games and franchises. It’s a game-changer for what we can build!
