James Gunn has announced that Superman will be available to stream on HBO Max this Friday, September 19th. This offers a more affordable way to watch the film – without the $19.99 rental fee on Prime Video – just over two months after it first hit theaters.

The movie launched in theaters on July 11th and has already made $615 million globally. Though it’s done well in cinemas, it’s expected to reach even more people through streaming. Viewers have responded to its hopeful and positive message, and now fans of the Peacemaker TV series will find it easier to see how the movie connects to the show.
Superman kicks off the new DC Universe with a fresh take on the classic hero’s story. David Corenswet plays Clark Kent/Superman, alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
The movie shows Superman dealing with the consequences of getting involved in a global conflict and trying to win back the public’s faith, with support from other heroes.
James Gunn wrote and directed the film, with Peter Safran as a producer. The story takes inspiration from the comic book *All-Star Superman* by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely.
The movie debuted at the TCL Chinese Theater on July 7th and received generally positive reviews. Critics particularly enjoyed its bright, upbeat style and the acting by Corenswet, Brosnahan, and Hoult. While a few reviewers felt the plot was a bit crowded, the overall response was favorable.
James Gunn’s Superman movie is the result of years of development, especially after plans for a sequel to *Man of Steel* fell through. Filmed in Norway, Georgia, and Ohio, production finished in July 2024. This film will kick off the first chapter of the new DC Universe, titled ‘Gods and Monsters,’ and a sequel, *Man of Tomorrow*, is planned for release on July 9, 2027.
Now that Superman’s story is available on HBO Max, more people can watch it without needing to rent it.
