We think the T.Ocellus alien – nicknamed “the octopus eye,” and especially creepy when it’s inside a zombified sheep – is the scariest creature in *Alien: Earth*. While the Xenomorph is still famous, nothing unsettles us more than that sheep, which might be the most disturbing of the four new alien species discovered by the *Maginot* in deep space. But in the second-to-last episode of *Alien: Earth*, we find out the sheep isn’t just frightening – it’s incredibly intelligent, actually.
The alien life form residing within the sheep is officially known as T. Ocellus. It has a history of possessing creatures – first a cat, losing it an eye, then briefly a human. Now contained at the Neverland Research Facility inside the sheep, it displays open hostility towards its captors. It cleverly manipulated a synthetic being named Toodles into accidentally locking himself in the adjacent cell while Toodles was attempting to feed other alien creatures. Tragically, Toodles, in his android body, was killed, and the sheep was forced to witness the event.
On security footage, Prodigy’s Kirsh (Timothy Olyphant) witnessed the event and realized the Ocellus sheep was much smarter than anyone thought. He told his boss, Boy Kavalier, about this, and Kavalier (Samuel Blenkin) went to the lab to see for himself. There, Kavalier surprisingly asked the sheep, as if it were a person, if it knew the value of pi. Kavalier believes any advanced civilization would know this fundamental formula, so he showed the sheep the beginning of the equation on his hand and asked, “What are the next three numbers?”
The sheep stamped its hoof once, a clear signal. Kavalier counted that as ‘one’ and asked for the next number. The sheep responded with five angry stamps. When it got the answer right, Kavalier was thrilled. This creature wasn’t just intelligent for an animal; it was remarkably bright, almost human-level, and possibly even smarter. Despite warnings about the potential danger of introducing this species to humans, Kavalier only thought about getting it near a person. He was even prepared to risk one of his own employees to see what would happen.
In the fifth episode, the T. Ocellus broke free and inhabited the ship’s engineer, Shmuel. While inside him, it even attacked a Xenomorph, biting it in the process. Although the Xenomorph killed Shmuel, the T. Ocellus managed to escape through his eye and then aggressively attacked the Xenomorph itself, proving the two species are definitely hostile towards each other. Interestingly, the sounds the T. Ocellus made while inhabiting Shmuel were remarkably similar to the sounds Wendy makes when communicating with them, hinting that they might originate from the same planet.
Throughout the history of this series, the Xenomorphs have never shown the ability to use tools or operate technology like spaceships. However, the T. Ocellus is different. If it can inhabit a host – especially a human – for an extended period, it could become the most intelligent alien creature we’ve encountered. We believe it learns by absorbing its host’s knowledge, which is a frightening thought, and we’re anticipating the dangerous consequences.
Alien: Earth is currently dropping new episodes every Tuesday on FX and FX on Hulu.
