Randy Pitchford, head of Gearbox, has been responding to criticism about Borderlands 4’s performance in a defensive way. He’s been using social media to offer help that comes across as subtly blaming players for the game’s issues, and has posted lengthy explanations suggesting the problems are due to individual player setups.
He told someone to build their own solution from scratch, which feels a bit like a chef telling a customer to cook for themselves after receiving a bad meal.
He previously argued that PC gamers need to understand how their computer’s parts affect game performance. However, the community pointed out that it’s the game developer’s job to clearly state what kind of hardware is needed to run the game well. Many players are experiencing performance issues with Borderlands 4, even on computers that meet the game’s stated recommended specifications, suggesting 2K Games and Gearbox haven’t provided accurate system requirements.
Pitchford advised players to stop trying to run games at maximum settings in 4K resolution on older computers and hardware.
Okay, so with Borderlands 4, they’ve really given us PC players a ton of options to tweak the game. You can adjust everything to get the perfect mix of smooth framerates, how sharp the game looks, and all those fancy visual effects. If it’s not running exactly how you like, definitely play around with the settings! Seriously, try out DLSS – it makes a huge difference and looks fantastic.
Borderlands 4 hit a record high yesterday with over 300,000 players online at the same time on Steam. While the game initially received negative reviews, ratings are now improving, which supports what the CEO has been saying – that online opinions don’t always match the actual player experience, as shown by the number of support requests they’ve received.
“This reality is dramatically different than what you would expect if your only sources of information were, say, certain internet threads,” he wrote. In which case it might be beneficial if he were to put down his phone instead of pouring gasoline over the fire.
Even though Randy Pitchford is currently engaged in a debate with PC gamers, console players have something to look forward to: Gearbox is adding a field of view (FoV) slider, a feature many found surprisingly absent from the game at launch.
