Long live the king?!
If Netflix were to acquire Warner Bros., including its DC Studios division, there’s a possibility that Zack Snyder’s Justice League universe could be revived.
According to a report by Variety, it’s being suggested that Warner Bros., which is about to operate independently, could be an attractive takeover candidate, according to Wells Fargo media analyst Steven Cahall.
What does Variety say? Netflix: “The Most Compelling Buyer”
Before the rumor of Skydance-Paramount bidding for Warner Bros., analyst Steven Cahall identified Netflix as the “most attractive candidate,” placing it above Amazon, Apple, Comcast, Sony, and Paramount Skydance in his rankings.
Before reports of Paramount Skydance preparing a bid for WBD emerged (originally reported by the Wall Street Journal), Wells Fargo media analyst Steven Cahall issued a statement suggesting that a standalone Warner Bros., in future, could be an appealing acquisition target. He mentioned Netflix as the most likely buyer among potential suitors, with others potentially including Amazon, Apple, Comcast, Sony, and Paramount Skydance.
Netflix Eyed as Top Buyer for Warner Bros.
The report emerges during a time when the entertainment industry is preparing for significant transformations. These changes could potentially involve technology companies buying film studios at low costs (reports even suggest Apple may have an interest in Disney, while Skydance is effectively a tech company due to its ties with Oracle; Netflix can be considered a tech company; Comcast owns Universal).
This way, the sentence maintains the original meaning while making it more accessible and natural for readers.
As a cinephile speaking directly, I’m excited about the news that Warner Bros. Discovery is planning to split in 2026 into two distinct companies: “Warner Bros.” (focusing on our beloved studios, HBO, DC, and more) and “Discovery Global” (keeping the cable and network assets). This move promises a more focused approach for both entities, potentially leading to even more captivating content for us movie lovers!
According to CEO David Zaslav, the division split has been validated and it’s believed that this arrangement significantly increases Warner Bros.’ appeal to potential buyers – particularly content-demanding heavyweights such as Netflix.
Snyder’s DC Return Becomes a Real Possibility?
If you’re a fan of Zack Snyder’s DC movies, such as “Man of Steel,” “Batman v Superman,” and “Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” the Netflix situation presents opportunities that were previously thought impossible.
After leaving the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), Zack Snyder has found a creative base at Netflix, where he’s been working on projects like “Rebel Moon”, “Army of the Dead”, and “Twilight of the Gods”.
Apart from his current work, he’s simultaneously developing a police drama series for a streaming platform. This potential acquisition could unite his past and present endeavors, giving him control over DC’s narrative.
Netflix Could Reboot or Revive the Snyderverse
Fans of Snyder have often discussed the possibility that Netflix might provide a means for resurrecting or restarting his take on the DC Universe.
Initially considered mere speculation, that concept now carries a hint of possibility. If Netflix were to fully own the studio and intellectual property, they would have the power to approve a Snyderverse sequel alongside other DC productions.
If the studio finds merit in maintaining various storylines – as they currently do with series, animations, and spin-offs – there’s no reason why elements from Snyder’s characters and narrative threads might not reappear in some fashion.
It’s possible that Zack Snyder’s planned parts for Justice League might now be released, along with Ben Affleck’s standalone Batman film.
What About James Gunn’s DCU?
That wouldn’t necessarily mean the end of James Gunn’s DCU, either.
Netflix, with its proven ability to handle extensive franchise series, is probably eager to acquire a substantial amount of DC content to bolster their platform even further.
As a devoted cinephile, I believe a two-pronged strategy would cater to diverse spectators. One pathway would retain Gunn’s consistent narrative style, while the other would maintain Snyder’s preferred gritty, atmospheric aesthetic. This way, fans of both directors can enjoy their respective visions within the same cinematic universe.
With DC IP under its control, Netflix could push volume, variety, and vision all at once.
On the other hand, just like I mentioned earlier, there’s a possibility that James Gunn is hastening the development of the DCU to make Warner Bros. appear more appealing if a sale were to occur in the future.
It seems Gunn is making swift progress towards bringing his projects to life, potentially aiming to increase the studio’s perceived worth as Warner Bros. and DC are set to change ownership.
