The next Pokémon game is Minecraft meets body horror

The biggest Nintendo Direct event yet by Nintendo has concluded, revealing various announcements including new movies, a motorcycle for Samus, an overwhelming number of Mega Pokémon, and a brand-new Pokémon game that’s both adorable and unsettling. This new game is called Pokémon Pokopia, and it’s arguably the strangest Pokémon game ever created.

In the game Pokémon Pokopia, players step into the shoes of a solitary Ditto who undergoes a unique transformation due to a significant cosmic event. Now appearing as a humanoid Ditto, this character embarks on a journey through a cube-structured world where they encounter various other Pokémon. By forming friendships with these Pokémon, the transformed Ditto can adopt their special abilities.

As a gamer, I’d rephrase that description like this: “I, as Ditto, can shape-shift my arms into lengthy vines for tending to grass, unleash water from my person to foster growth in those very same blades of grass, and transform my hands into boxing gloves when it’s time to clear some land. Despite the slightly unsettling body manipulation aspect of Ditto, I must admit that its adorable appearance is quite endearing.

The game incorporates elements from various sources, notably Minecraft’s construction and landscape shaping features, Animal Crossing’s social components, but appears to be most influenced by the Dragon Quest Builders series. Given that Koei Tecmo, who developed Dragon Quest Builders 2, is collaborating on the project alongside Game Freak, the game shares a similar look and feel as a result.

As of now, a specific launch date hasn’t been announced for Pokémon Pokopia, but Nintendo has indicated that it will be available on the Nintendo Switch 2 in the year 2026.
