Stephen King, the author, has been subjected to criticism following his removal of a tweet that contained misleading statements concerning Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist who passed away this week at Utah Valley University.
King’s Comments
Friday saw King sharing on X that Kirk supported the punishment of death by stoning for homosexuality, but this assertion was swiftly proven false when old statements emerged showing Kirk had actually advocated for embracing gay individuals within the conservative movement.
King later deleted the post and issued a series of apologies, writing:
- “I apologize for saying Charlie Kirk advocated stoning gays. What he actually demonstrated was how some people cherry-pick Biblical passages.”
- “The horrible, evil, twisted liar apologizes. This is what I get for reading something on Twitter w/o fact-checking. Won’t happen again.”
- “I have apologized. Charlie Kirk never advocated stoning gays to death. I was wrong, and I apologize. I have deleted the post.”
Fallout
Online fans criticized King’s comments, claiming that he was disseminating false information during a crucial period.
The king’s comments are made in relation to the upcoming release of “The Long Walk,” a new movie adaptation of King’s classic novel, featuring Mark Hamill and set to hit theaters this weekend.
Due to a post by writer Gretchen Felker-Martin celebrating the character Kirk’s demise on social media, DC Comics has decided to terminate her “Red Hood” series. They have withdrawn all upcoming issues and reimbursed retailers because their code of conduct prohibits inciting hostility or violence.
It’s reported that Sucker Punch Productions terminated the employment of senior artist Drew Harrison, who was involved in projects like Ghost of Tsushima and the forthcoming Ghost of Yotei, following controversial online remarks about the death of Kirk, which were perceived as being insensitive.
What Happened to Charlie Kirk
On Wednesday, Charlie Kirk, the creator of Turning Point USA, tragically lost his life after being shot while speaking to a large crowd of students at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. He sustained a gunshot wound to the neck, which was inflicted from a bullet fired from a rooftop. Regrettably, he passed away later at the hospital.
The President, Donald Trump, announced on Truth Social that Kirk had passed away, and later declared that Kirk will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously. As per both Trump and Utah authorities, a suspect is currently under arrest.
